I find the echo dots to have vastly better sync with the multi room audio. I can have 2 of them infront of me and they actually image to between them, they are that locked in sync and its constant rather than the chromecasts which drift apart over time and will have a different offset when you start casting to the group again.

I may have some come up that I will sell if I can find where I put them. I thought they were in with the games console stuff I packed away but I got that out recently and not in there.

I read today that the reason why Google is killing the Chromecast audio is that they see the future as smart speakers and don't want to sell a cheap accessory that will cannibalise the more lucrative product. Frankly, I don't want to purchase speakers that are always listening to me - rather, Id rather be listening to the speaker (but maybe I'm old fashioned).

Are echo dots a good alternative to Chromecast audios now that they have been discontinued?

One difference that may be important for some is that the Dot doesn’t have a digital out, only analogue, so I assume that means you’re reliant on the quality of the internal DAC. Not the case with the Chromecast which has analogue and digital out via 3.5mm.

I don't trust it. Tech companies have given us plenty of significant privacy fails of late to be cynical.
