MadEngineer:jonherries: My nana has one, she is 91 and can even do FaceTime with it…and turn off the reminder prompt that will appear for not having a PIN.
Some suggestions are, keep it pugged in with a longish cable, turn on auto updates, hide the apps she doesn’t need to use and keep in in a upright position (folded back case type arrangement) with no passcode.
Also have done printed paper instructions with screenshots and red circles as reminders.

(Sarcasm) Even better, don’t put an Apple ID on it. That way it’ll still be useful to the next user - they can access all her information, do some shopping & put their own Apple ID on, in case they misplace it. (/sarcasm)
Not having a screen lock creates what’s called an Open Menu device. You can still have an Apple ID & Find My iDevice on an Open Menu iPad, no problem there. You can also rip that Apple ID straight on out within a couple of minutes, leaving an opportunity to create the situation above. Open Menu via Proxy Service - very simple, very fast, very effective. Completely useless against any device with a screen lock however.
It doesn’t matter how recent the device is, Open Menu is applicable to all iDevices incl the very latest products. You don’t need to jailbreak & it’s not an expensive service to purchase either.
