Looking for an iPad for my 90 year old neighbour.

Her favourite community newspaper no longer gets delivered to our street so she is missing out on Senior day trips.

Also, Spark have sent her a letter to say they will charge her $2.50/month to receive paper invoices from now.

I'm hoping we can connect something up to her Spark Wireless Landline modem (let me know if that's not allowed) as she doesn't use the internet otherwise.

Preferably a full size (not mini), storage doesn't matter, age doesn't really matter as long as it is reliable and she will be able to read the paper and check emails for her Spark invoices.

Hopefully no issue with tremor, as touch screens don't separate the button locating and button pushing functions.  Caused massive frustration for us.

It will depend on her plan,  but is she is on the standard $45/month "basic" plan there are 40GB included, - which will let her minimal access .. keep her away from Netflix thou.... :)

I don't see any pricing for Wireless Landline only? It's always bundled with broadband as far as I can tell.

I can't really see it being cost effective? Surely she'd be better off on a mobile phone? Obviously likely a bit tricky on the learning curve side.

But for example $4 for 500mb data and $4 for 200 min calling on Warehouse Mobile might fit the bill. So $8 per month, plus cost of mobile phone ~$300 ish.

Anyway maybe worth a consider.

Another idea, if she frequents the library at all, is to use their computers to check. Or there are so many free WIFI spots now, might not need direct access at home...

Thanks I will check with her
When I looked up the old plans it didn’t mention data, but it has a sticker on it saying it’s not to be used for anything else.. but if that’s the case she would be paying $50 and would be better off on the $45 plan anyway.

They have obviously bumped up the data on this plan.

My parents got talked into the Wireless Landline a few years ago - I found out (via geekzone in fact), that even though it wasn't mentioned anywhere, there was something like 2GB of data available each month. At least 40GB is more useful.

My nana has one, she is 91 and can even do FaceTime with it…

Some suggestions are, keep it pugged in with a longish cable, turn on auto updates, hide the apps she doesn’t need to use and keep in in a upright position (folded back case type arrangement) with no passcode.

Also have done printed paper instructions with screenshots and red circles as reminders.

There are some accessibility options that might help

What's her budget for this project? New iPads range from $570 to $4100 - ouch!

You're probably best considering only devices still supported by Apple - those that still receive firmware upgrades. Face ID would be a good thing, securing the device without physical interaction being required.

Having no security is never a good idea, especially considering that she will be doing financial transactions from it. With a multitude of securing options available - from entering a PIN to just looking at the screen - it's stupid to ignore the ever-increasing threat posed by criminals. Making it easier for her (Face ID) means you're looking at a first gen iPad Pro 10.5" as an entry level.

I've seen 64GB WiFi versions of those from $5-600 on Trademe.

You should get your neighbour to enquire about the Skinny Jump wireless broadband plan. 5 lots of 30Gig 4G Data increments at $5 each. Thats a 150Gig maximum per month for $25. Perfect for that new IPAD. I got the mother in law on it and she loves it.

This is the right answer. The first 30GB is free too. Get Skinny Jump from your local library.

and turn off the reminder prompt that will appear for not having a PIN.
