Consumer have provided the following info to let you "opt out" of the price increase. I haven't tried it, so not sure if it will work for everyone, but might be worth trying. https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/you-don-t-have-to-pay-the-microsoft-365-price-increase

Yep I did that and it worked, it changed it back to $12 a month for me.

I wish I knew that 2 weeks ago.

Hopefully it will still work in 12 months time, or even better, MS give you the option to opt out by then.

I did look at that; but it seems to also drop the Microsoft Workplace Discount at the same time - annoying!

This doesn't seem to be working anymore for me. Instead of "choose a plan that's right for you" per the screenshot I now get "Exclusive benefits you get with your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription" with the buttons now being "I don't want my subscription" and "I want to keep my benefits".

I was however able to use the Microsoft Workplace Discount Program to get the personal subscription for $125.30 which is a few dollars cheaper anyway.

Thats all I got when I cancelled mine as well.  That and a few extra months offer.

I've got the 5 Device Plan with Workplace discount, got an e-mail this morning saying that at my renewal time in July the price is moving from $179/year to $229/year.

I'm sure I only paid around $140 last year so I'm calling that an unjustifiable hike. I mainly only use it for ad-free e-mail and OneDrive storage but this is enough to make me look to shop around for cheaper cloud storage.

I got the same email ; the advised $229 price is the same as the current "standard" pricing, so I'm wondering if this is either a mistaken email OR if they're removing the Workplace Discount for some reason - otherwise it's a pretty steep increase (almost 30%).

Is there anyone here who can make an official statement or comment about this?

Interestingly, when I checked the actual Microsoft Subscription page under my Microsoft account, it suggested that my current renewal (July 2025) would be NZ$160; which clearly is less than the amount advised in the email.  This makes me think the email was sent in error.

Regardless, I then did a little checking, and have discovered that I can sign up again for the Workplace discount, which I did - meaning I've now pre-paid at the same rate as current until July 2026...

If the rate DOES increase later this year, I've put it off by pre-paying; and if not, I'm no worse off (except having paid $$ now rather than in July).

MS justifies the price because Office now contains Copilot which  most  people  don't want in an office suite.  When mine expires I'm moving to a free office suite though Outlook will be a hard replacements

Didnt I just get a letter form mS saying that this years renewal will be $179?

I just received

Starting on 06/02/2025, the price for your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription will change from NZD 129.00/year to NZD 179.00/year.

I was alarmed to see Microsoft Outlook on iPhone offering to get CoPilot to write my email.

No, I do not want CoPilot, AI, Clippy, Microsoft Total Recall or The Hackenthorpe Book of Lies. It is bad enough with all the human generated disinformation without computer invented falsehoods.

I hope that AI is the new killer app, and kills every company that forces it onto their users without consent.

I would be interested in jumping ship to something like LibreOffice etc, but my clients are so invested in Microsoft, with Teams, Office, Sharepoint and Outlook. While things like Word and Excel documents are quite well supported in alternative office suites, what about collaborative stuff like shared documents, meetings, calendars etc?

Been watching this with interest.
I tend to agree that they’re pricing themselves out of the market for us ‘older’ or casual home users.
I’ve been running a decent Synology NAS for years now and reckon it’s time I moved everything away from OneDrive (about 850Gb) to the NAS with active syncing, and something like Libre and free EMClient to handle multiple accounts that I still run.
Interested in what others have done and any perceived or otherwise traps.
