Just following up on this request.  I took the advice above and bought a firewire card from AliExpress, this cost about $20 including a cable (which I didn't need but...) and arrived in less than a week.  I've just installed it in the Win 10 PC and it works great, downloaded WinDV, connected the camera and tested capturing some video.  Definitely quicker, easier and better quality than the makeshift analogue method I was using.

 

So, many thanks for all the advice from the GZ community, my son is very happy with the retro movies he has made so far so this will get a lot of use.
