Wow, an acoustic coupler! Would all the young ones on here even now what one of these are? LOL!  Would love to know what the 'top secret project' is, as the coupler is not much use on it's own.

War-dialing BBS's perhaps?

The last things I remember using acoustic coupling were the terminals for hearing impaired.
