Morning All

Anyone know of a cheap place to recondition batteries in Auckland :
HR5.8-12 Lead Acid Batteries

Similar to : http://www.batterytown.com/product/21699.html

Would it be better to replace them or just recondition them?

Hey, have you listed a price, location and how much shipping would be to other parts of New Zealand? Also if you are asking for a PM make sure your Privacy settings allow your account to receive PM otherwise people can't contact you. Also note if you are selling something we ask you to offer to other members first. Links to private sales (including Trade Me posts) aren't accepted anymore and will be removed.

It's a SLA battery. Buy new ones and take them to a metal recycler and you'll get a few $ back from each battery as scrap.

Hey Wes,

Have a look at: http://www.thebatterycellonline.co.nz/webapps/p/87668/206016/525318

The VCP120045 looks about the same size (slightly less AH though).

They also have a 5 AH one. VCP120050

For the cost its likely not worth doing.
Simpower in East Tamaki maybe able to help out, they build batteries to request, but again, likely more expensive that purchasing a new one.

best answer ever! never thought of that option!

@trig42, thanks. Sounds like a plan!

@hsvhel, yea seems that way, some companies say its too low to even try the reconditioning.

if the battery is not doing what it is meant to then its either faulty (dropped cell, internal short) or its plates are degrading due to abusive use or just ageing. In these cases there isn't a remedy its just replaced. On some occasions batteries sulphate which usually happens with batteries that are left in a state of discharge and the lead sulphate forms crystals on the negative plate, generally if charged early this will reverse but if left for over a few  weeks it is generally irreversible and the crystals get larger and where they are on the plate that part is unable to work so capacity is dropped. You hear people say the battery won't hold charge and this is usually the cause.

Some of the new charges claim to rejuvenate batteries by pulsing a charge into the battery and whilst this may improve performance it won't take away all the crystals if they have been there a while. Likewise with additives does little more than knock off the early sulphation, suffice there seems to be no scientific prove any of it works properly.

The other cause is stratification whereby a battery isn't fully charged (think of a car only used in built up areas and travels at low speeds with accessories running so battery never gets full charge) the acid will concentrate at the bottom of the battery meaning the top half of plates don't perform properly and the bottom half will eventually sulphate up. You will get a high voltage due to concentration of acid but will have no real cranking ability.

The above is for flooded type batteries (car batteries etc) AGM, VRLA/SLA batteries are sealed so you can't get into them to do anything but they don't suffer from stratification and rarely from sulpphation.
