Looking to improve my TV sound without spending a fortune, suggestions?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

All I really want is clearer sound from the TV, not needing surround sound etc, simple stereo would be fine. Budget? Well am a OAP so its pretty much non-existant :-)

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

How is the TV mounted? What is the TV model?

Under $100. TV is free-standing, an older Sony KLV V32A10

Google best sound bars under $100. I think you need to up your budget if you want anything decent though. Amazon has some good points of reference with feedback from happy customers. Then you just need to find a retailer locally who stocks the one you decide on.

I would suggest a second hand stereo. You can pick them up quite cheap on trademe with RCA inputs and a remote control. E.g. Auction no. 723071863 . One of the tapes runs fast so its going cheap. Thats the sort of thing I mean. I use an old Aiwa surround sound system without the surround for my computer speakers. The CD and the tapes no longer work but the tuner and auxiliary work fine. So I can put the National Programme on when I want as an alternative to Windows sounds. All my music is on the computer so no need of a CD player.

I get why you want to move away from TV sound (I can't think when I've heard a modern TV with sound that I find acceptable, TBH), but you'll risk ending up with something sounding no better (if not potentially worse) than your TV if you don't buy judiciously. Given your budget, this means going s/h I reckon.

While it's not ideal to plug speakers into the headphone jack (not known for their sound quality, usually), I guess this is critical if you want to be able to control the volume remotely on many 2.1 systems.

If you do go the 2.1 route (which I agree could result in far better sound than a cheap sound bar), I'd recommend a no-longer-current Logitech z2300. An award-winner in their day, they still sound better than many current models. A relatively full sound, goes loud enough, a decent amount of bass... I picked up a set from TM that I use at work for listening to music, and would rate them highly.
