Are those USB to Galaxy Tab cables (I think they are 30-pin, very thin and 20mm wide) useful for anything other than Samsung tablets?

No they are proprietary. Only work with Galaxy Tab & Tab 2, and maybe some other early Samsung device.
Newer models move to standard micro usb like most phones.

Ha ha, best idea so far.

My wife got it as a 'Secret Santa' gift and is 3 meters long .... maybe she really wants me to do something else with it?

Sure it's a Galaxy Tab cable and not an older (pre Lightning) iPod/iPhone cable? Never seen a 3 meter Galaxy Tab cable, have often seen 3m iPod cables (and yes, they are very useful!)

They do look remarkably similar, but are slightly different sizes at the 30pin ends....

Having never owned either product, I don't know .... the larger connector looks very Apple-ish, and is engraved with a little oblong, with a short line inside it.

Sounds like it is a apple iPod cable. As all of mine have the same oblong with line picture on them.

And can I nominate myself for this cable if you are in Auckland? Even though my only iDevices are 2 160GB iPod Classics. Im forever running out of those cables.
