I have a Chromecast I don’t want. It is virtually new and unused. As far as I can tell it works the way it was designed to, but unfortunately it doesn’t work well for me. It is a parallel import (American plug pins).

I am declaring an auction for this device. It will run for one week. At the end I will choose a winner. The winner will not necessarily be the highest bidder, though that will of course be an important factor. Each bid must be accompanied by the name of a charity that the bid will go to. I will consider all but my preference is for children and animal welfare.

At the end of the auction I will decide on the winner, who will PM me his or her address. I will send the Chromecast to that address. The winner will then make a donation to the chosen charity for the amount bid in the auction. This will be on an honour basis. I believe Geekzone members are of a sufficiently high standard to keep such a promise.

Hey, have you listed a price, location and how much shipping would be to other parts of New Zealand? Also if you are asking for a PM make sure your Privacy settings allow your account to receive PM otherwise people can't contact you. Also note if you are selling something we ask you to offer to other members first. Links to private sales (including Trade Me posts) aren't accepted anymore and will be removed.

$30 - Not specifically for children but Royal Foundation for the Blind. I donate small amounts to them for puppy/guide dog training already but will make another donation. I know there's a lot of poverty out there in the world and that's sad...but what does make me appreciate what I have is thinking about the poor people right here in NZ who can't see. Imagine not being able to see loved ones, nature, television, beauty of everything around us. I know I could not manage a day...it'd seem too difficult to even try!

Anyway, sorry for the long message and going a bit off topic. If anyone is interested in making a small donation: http://blindfoundation.org.nz/

I have no association with them by the way. Just makes me sad when I think of things like this...Urrgggh. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. Anyway, thanks and great idea. Love what you're doing here Rikkitic.

Just a reminder that this auction will expire on Friday. Until I declare it over I will continue to accept bids.

This is the last day of my Chromecast charity auction. Some time this afternoon I will end the auction and declare a winner. Up until then, bids will continue to be accepted.

$30.

This would go to Te Omanga Hospice because hospices everywhere do a fantastic job of looking after people (irrespective of age) over the course of their final time, as well as providing support to distressed family members.

Ok, time to declare a winner. This is a tough call because all of these charities are deserving. Of course that is always the problem. There is so much need and so little to go around.

My decision is arbitrary and has nothing to do with the worthiness of the cause. That would be impossible. How do you say no to a blind person, or a kid with cancer?

However I only have one Chromecast to give away and I have decided to give it to StGabriel who will donate $15 to Waikato RSPCA and $20 for the guide dogs. Why did I not choose one of the others, or a higher bid? Some charities, like child cancer, are well-known and have a wide support base. My reasoning, right or wrong, is that they have more alternatives to draw upon. The SPCA, on the other hand, is entirely dependant on donations and receives no other source of funding. I almost went with freitasm, mainly because of the generosity of his bid. But I imagine Waikato SPCA can use the money even more and I like the idea of the guide dogs. StGabriel please PM me with your mailing address and I will send the Chromecast next week. The rest of you each get a +1 from me for participating in this auction.

As far as the other charities go, they all deserve our support and I hope you will consider making your donations anyway. I’m sure they would be much appreciated. Thank you all for your interest in this auction. Maybe someone else with unwanted hardware will feel inclined to follow this example some time.
