Trying to breathe a little life into a geriatric PC and drag it whimpering and moaning into the exciting world of 64bit processing.

If anyone has such a beastie (or better quad core substitute for a 775 LGA board), flick me a reply and we can haggle over the pacific pesos.

Thanks in advance,
R2.

Hey, have you listed a price, location and how much shipping would be to other parts of New Zealand? Also if you are asking for a PM make sure your Privacy settings allow your account to receive PM otherwise people can't contact you. Also note if you are selling something we ask you to offer to other members first. Links to private sales (including Trade Me posts) aren't accepted anymore and will be removed.

l43a2: how much were you looking at spending for this chip?

A fair price, would be my answer. On ebay today there's a Q8400 going for US$21, which would attract shipping of another US$20 to get it here in around 7-10 days, based on experience. But I can't be effed waiting that long if I can get my mitts on one locally.

So around $60 NZ sounds fair to me, depending on courier costs or whatever.

As far as I can tell, there's not much difference between the two CPUs performance wise, so yep. I think the 9450 has a lower power consumption which isn't a bad thing. I already have a decent CPU cooler so all I'd need is the actual chip.

Where are you based and are you OK with $60 for it?

Cheers,

If you have no luck sourcing a 775 quad locally there is a very easy mod you can do to make a socket 771 Xeon work. Historically the 775 Quads were commanding a premium as a lot of people were upgrading to them towards the end of the sockets lifetime. At the same time there was a glut of high end Xeon's on the market as servers were being decom'd.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll look into it.

Despite it looking promising a couple of hours ago, sadly the potential agreement with l43a2 has fallen through and I'm back in the market for a quad core LGA775 CPU. So, don't be shy - sitting at the bottom of a dusty box full of retired PC components is some buckeroo-generating relic of yesteryear computing, just itching to be swapped for some dosh.

Or not...

I live in hope...

Cheers,
R2

Two questions for you:

Is there a particular Xeon that you would recommend?

Does the Xeon need to be coupled with ECC memory? Pretty sure my GA-ED45 board doesn't support it but I may be wrong.

The 4GB of RAM that's on the board right now is non-ECC.

Tx for your help.

R2

EDIT: A little more sleuthing reveals that ECC is based around motherboard/chip support, and Xeons don't need it, so it appears that my existing RAM and the additional 4GB I intend to fit can be non-ECC with no issues.

So as a backup, I'll start searching for some decommissioned Xeons once I know what to look for.
