Hey team,

Would love some of your lovely insights again.

Currently in Blenheim visiting mum for the hols, she has a very decent laptop but its 4 years old, CPU is idling around 50c so i think the thermal grease needs replacing and would LOVE to know where I can buy some in Blenheim.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, have you listed a price, location and how much shipping would be to other parts of New Zealand? Also if you are asking for a PM make sure your Privacy settings allow your account to receive PM otherwise people can't contact you. Also note if you are selling something we ask you to offer to other members first. Links to private sales (including Trade Me posts) aren't accepted anymore and will be removed.

To be honest, its more likely animal hair and lint between the heatsink fins and the fan exhaust... Open it up, there usually is about a sock layer of lint.

Or...it might just be AMD... :)

Additionally, just go into a PC repair shop for thermal paste...they'll probably sell you one, might not be top grade stuff (probably OEM) but it'll do

If you going to use anything from Jaycar then this is the only stuff I'd touch of theirs

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/Electromechanical-Components/Heatsinks-%26-Accessories/Thermal-Compounds-%26-Adhesives/Heatsink-Compound---3g-Syringe-with-Applicator/p/NM2018

that will more than enough to re-paste a laptop and it's non-conductive although I'd have a look around town see if you can find a local computer shop and see if they sell something of better quality like TH2 or Arctic Silver 5

Not AMD, intel i5 and I've cleaned out everything but the heat sinks so I'm happy to re do the thermal grease

I've been building pcs for a few years and normally just use the thermal grease that comes with the CPU cooler.

What's the diff between 'good' or 'bad' thermal paste

Quite a few degrees!

Not only lower temps but longer lasting the plain white grease (silicone thermal paste) you can get dirt cheap is the worst crap you can buy but some that are more expensive can also be almost as crap or only a little better

here's a good review on thermal compounds http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?Itemid=62&id=150&option=com_content&task=view

a
lot of the time though it also comes down to how it's applied to much can worse than to little what you want is a thin layer over the IHS on the CPU/GPU or anywhere else it's needed
