If you know any sparkies ask them if they have some old TPS cable you could have. As 16AWG is about 1.3mm2 so some 1.5mm2 TPS should do the job. And if you have some old extension cords. Some are made with 1.5mm2 as well.

I've been in a few '$2 shop' type stores that have lengths of 'OFC' speaker cable. Maybe have a look in one of those?
