I would highly recommend you get one with some amount of warranty remaining.
I had a surface pro 2 for almost two years. It only became faulty when the headphone port became broken.
This was replaced under warranty with a surface pro 3. I used this for about 4 days before going on an overseas trip. Whilst working during the plane trip the device became somewhat unresponsive so I restarted the unit. When rebooting it became stuck on the surface screen. After a painful 7 days trying to reboot/refresh/reinstall, Microsoft sent out another surface pro 3 replacement to me overseas via the local support network.
Have been using this now for 3 weeks. Only issue I have found is that sometimes the typecover stops working completely, if this happens have to do a manual full power off.
Good device but not convinced about its long-term reliability.
Yup buy it new, at least then you can return it and get it replaced a few times when something inevitably breaks.
Surface Pro Service has been excellent in my experience (1 year, 1 month of almost 7 day a week before it developed a fault - the battery would no longer hold any charge)
Definitely ensure you have some warranty left (and /or a second device whilst it's in transist for repair ...)
Geez guys thanks for the warnings. So which route to take? Ipad pro or maybe look at HP I had some pretty good luck with HP in the past. I am looking to spend $600-$1400 tablet keyboard.

heavenlywild: Sounds like some awesome service to me. Did you buy directly from MS to get a replacement while overseas?
No I bought it from a PB Tech open box clearance sale. The PB Tech documentation said there was only a 6 month return to base warranty but I tried and successfully registered the SP2 with MS for a two year warranty.
My two year warranty has only just run out so I'm kinda happy I have a new SP3.
MS' service has been stellar. Although admittedly they are only sending out replacement devices.

I really wish the Surface Pro range was as durable as my ipad 2. If I were you I would perhaps look at a Dell Inspirion 2 in 1 or XPS 13 2 in 1but you'll need to do your own research as I'm just going off great experiences with Dell products quite a few years ago.
I'm really not convinced with the Ipad Pro. It seems really expensive for just a ultra high def Ipad.
If you're not needing a huge amount of horsepower under the hood, something like an Asus Transformer or Dell Venue Pro. Battery life in these types of fanless tablets is pretty awesome at 7-8 hours. I just bought an Asus Transformer T100CHI for my wife. I'd call it cheap and cheerful. Resolution is low, but I don't think I would want 1080p at 10.1" anyway. You should look for 4gb Ram with Windows 10 Home.
I used to have a Dell Venue Pro 11 with extended battery keyboard which basically doubled it's battery life.

Depends what you want the Surface for. For me I already had a MacBook Pro that is my main workhorse so the Surface was for meetings/collaboration/taking notes/etc. That's why I went for the 9.7" iPad Pro when I returned the Surface. No regrets either, the Surface Book was amazing when it worked, but the iPad Pro does everything I need for the use case I mentioned, and is super reliable.
