I messed up and lost my Windows key with my HTPC.

It's an Acer R3700. Basically over the weekend I replaced and upgraded the existing HDD and then re-formatted the original HDD to use as external storage in a caddy.

As I was installing Win 7 on the new HDD I first checked the case and then the box and found no Win 7 COA sticker. Uh-oh..

After some googling apparently the windows 7 key was attached directly to the original OS or may have been kept in restore partition which I just wiped. Bugger.

Hey, have you listed a price, location and how much shipping would be to other parts of New Zealand? Also if you are asking for a PM make sure your Privacy settings allow your account to receive PM otherwise people can't contact you. Also note if you are selling something we ask you to offer to other members first. Links to private sales (including Trade Me posts) aren't accepted anymore and will be removed.

Consider calling Acer

Well out of warranty. Called and they said that I could send the unit for repair for $265 NZD and they would reimage the new HDD with a windows 7 OS.

I had started used the old 40gb HDD to copy media files in prep of new HDD. So it can't be said that the old HDD has not written new data after formatting. I could try tonight but a full restoration which will allow PC to boot seems very unlikely.

Awesome that seems like the best solution. Have you bought a win 7 key yourself? After seeing an earlier thread from a year ago I might poke a few of the GZers to see if their PCs haven't been deactivated or flagged for pirated key. It appears kinguin has a buy protection insurance addon for 1 euro too.

This means I can also get Windows 7 pro (from Home edition) - for no obvious benefit :p

Thanks to Mod; earlier thread unlocked and seeking an update on Kinguin experiences.

I buy from them all the time, the link I gave you is to the seller I always use, worst case scenario you will have to activate via the automated phone system.

You'd have to ask yourself "why are those Microsoft product keys so cheap?"

I have never seen an OEM machine, that came with Windows 7 on it, without a COA on the case somewhere, even on those smaller book-sized units.

You sure you have checked everywhere?

It's not inside the case somewhere?
