Because of an insurance claim my wife is being offered a replacement iPhone 6S 128GB, however we've already replaced her phone and so the replacement isn't needed.  I've been looking around on Trademe to see what I would likely get for it if I was to try and sell it, and it isn't encouraging.  Unless people are just using the buy now, it doesn't look like these phones are selling for anything like the retail price, even brand new/unopened box.

I'm curious to know what people here on GZ would genuinely pay for a brand new/unopened iPhone 6S 128GB.  My thinking is that if the price I would get for it is too far from the retail price, I might be better off paying a bit extra to get a phone that I might be tempted to keep for myself, and selling my own, even older phone.

I sold my unopened latest model iPhone for $300 less than RRP. Note this was the latest model, not second to latest like yours.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about.

The thing is, there is always a risk buying through trademe.

If I could inspect before pickup and you have a receipt I'd probably pay $1000-$1100 for a $1300 phone depending on how desperate I was at the time.

With the iphone 8 coming out later this year, prices on older generations will drop a little more quickly too.

When I was crunching the numbers I anticipated that there would be some "depreciation" of about 10-15% over the retail price, but from your responses it sounds like I'm being pretty optimistic, and 15-20% is probably more realistic.  And as you say with a new phone due out so soon it isn't going to get any better...

Good outcome - spoke to the insurance company and they just agreed to payout the difference, meaning we get full value without the hassle of having to onsell an unwanted phone.
