Compatible with the Moto Z Family of phones, this backpack-type clip-on device turns your Moto Z phone into a 70" big screen on the fly.

The proviso is, though, you gotta have a Moto Z to start with - & I don't know anyone with a Motorola phone. I figure that Geekzone would have to be the most likely place to find that rare beast - a Moto Z owner. Are you that person?

Details here:
https://www.motorola.com/us/products/moto-mods/moto-insta-share-projector#moto-mods

Kinda cool idea, I don't know how often you'd use it though. It's tiny, lightweight &, as you'd expect, fairly low res - 854x480 WVGA (480p). I suspect it's largely a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, more useless than useful.

Forget the $US299 price tag. It's sitting in my desk drawer waiting for someone with a Moto Z to turn up. Likelihood of that happening? SFA. Personally, I object to devices gathering dust when someone could be using them.

So if you own a Moto Z handset & come get it. Free. $0. From central Auckland.

Yes, I'll courier it - you're paying for that though.

That's a condition of the offer, I guess I should have been a little more definitive. I do want this projector to go to a Moto Z owner.

It's not an opportunity for Steptoe to grasp & profit wildly from my generosity, it's an opportunity for a Moto Z owner to make their phone a little more functional.

I would be very happy to take this off your hands, with the caveat that I am getting a Moto Z later this month. :)

Rest assured that if that's acceptable, this projector would go on to help sell the dream of modular phones to many NZ businesses and come very much in handy for my work. Demo kits are great fun.

Hmm, ok, it's yours when you send me proofs. Whatever it is, copy of an order form, receipt, EXIF tagged image from the Z, I dunno, something.

Just because "what if"?

Until I get the proofs, it's still available. But as soon as you've got some evidence to me, it's yours.

Moto Z modular idea looks really cool - especially the 10x optical zoom add on.

@NikT - will you be ranging these?

PS. @1024kb - very generous offer. Hope some good karma comes your way.

I do have a Moto Z (from Verizon) and so I would be keen. I have a couple of the mods, the Tumi power adapter and the JBL speaker.

So if you are willing to give it to the person who actually has the phone rather than will get one, then I am your recipient :-)

Don't you mean "Given Away?!" ;) that is an incredibly awesome thing for you to do and glad it went to a person with one of these phones.

Thanks to the OP for this very generous gift. His assumption was right - would not be many Z owners in NZ. I bought mine (Z Droid so Verizon model) from ebay (new) complete with the JBL speaker attachment and had it shipped to my daughter in LA who brought it back on a trip. Wanted to upgrade a Nexus 6 but could not afford a Pixel and this seemed like a good compromise (I like Motorola phones).

Great deal on ebay (US$399 including the JBL speaker Mod).

Was apprehensive about it being locked to Verizon but turns out Verizon has to sell phones unlocked if they wanted access to LTE frequencies. So while there are a few Verizon custom apps on the phone I was able to replace them with the stock Android ones including the dialer, Contacts, camera etc. Only Verizon artefacts are the Verizon boot animation and a message that can be swiped away saying, SIM card is not from Verizon.

Not sure it covers all the LTE frequencies in NZ but I get 4G most of the time of Vodafone. Phone has the following frequencies

LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 13(700) - USA

Vodafone appears to have 4G - 1800 MHz LTE, 2600 MHz, and 700 MHz

I guess I am on band (3)  (7) and (13)?

Having microSD card support is nice but I haven't had to use that since most of my stuff is stored in the cloud.

I can't wait for the wow factor when I do a preso at work with the phone and projector :-)

Good stuff, hope you enjoy mate - much better it go to you than me. :)

FYI NZ's 700MHz is band 28 - US has a completely different band plan for the 700MHz range and they're not cross-compatible.

Some pictures from the projector (sorry about the quality but it's hard to capture). It's way cooler in real life and when the room is darker. Thanks again to the OP.

Showing projection of a movie

And the Android home screen

Note while the phone is in landscape mode, for some reason the image on the all is in portrait.

I'm pleased to see this innovative device find a good home.

Does it play, say, Popcorntime streams in a way that you'd sit through the entire movie? Or is that kinda pushing boundaries?

I don't know about Popcorntime streams but it plays videos just fine. The image I shot was from a TV show playing from a share on my server. It would be fine with Netflix or other streaming video sites.  The only other accessories I would add are 1) external audio which would have to be a Bluetooth speaker since the Z does not have a headphone jack and 2) external power supply.
