I'm looking to install something which will extend wifi outside to surround area, within 200m range from the unit.

I'm looking at a rectangular area of around 30m wide x 200m. I'm basically wanting to have wifi in a shared open space, which is surrounded by houses.

I don't have the ability to put a unit up at the other end (I'm not very clued up with how this tech works) so it would be a single unit sending casting a wifi signal downwards.

200m to handheld devices isnt going to work. Perhaps to desktop PCs with a high gain directional antenna on it to go back might.

I have a unifi mesh on the front of my garage. Driveway is about 120m long. At the far end get almost nothing on 5GHz, 2.4Ghz has some signal, but it will connect but not even stream spotify.

When I had a 2.4GHz only sector antenna type AP there, it was a little better on the downstream, but I still couldnt hold a voip call when taking the trash out.

as mentioned, 200M coverage, in an urban situation could be pushing it.

Are you able to install an AP at the location? - IE do you have power there.

If it's a communal ground, and you want WiFi for while your down there... I'd be tempted to DYI it.

Have a P2P link between house and the onsite "AP". AP could be inside a enclosure for easy use, Battery powered.

What you want to do is not realistically possible if you want to deliver a quality solution (or depending on the the noise a solution that actually works).

In a crowded urban area 2.4GHz at 200m will be unusable. Free space loss with 5GHz will be even worse.

Thanks, I will try to obtain some hardware and give it a go anyway. Whatever coverage I can get will be better than no coverage.

What are you trying to achieve with this wifi access over this location? Streaming video out over something or just checking facebook for new likes etc?

Being budget constrained isn't really an option here if you want something that will work. That being the case my recommondation would be something like a 2nd hand Ruckus 7762S - you'll get one landed in NZ for probably NZ$400ish

I'm running an old Motels OWL500 AP with twin 1db antennas, I get about 120m on a good day with that.

Keeping in mind this is old tech now (G 2.4ghz wi-fi so maxes at 100Mbps)

So far I haven't found anything that can match that beast for range.

120m sounds pretty good, I'll keep an eye out for these units. Not concerned with data bandwidth so 2.4Ghz would be fine.

The range is almost always going to be an issue with the phone/tablet as others have said. You can only do that distance with directional gear.

I'd either temporarily pull out a AP on a long CAT6 cable when you need it, or try setup an AP permanently where you need it. Find or build some cover for it.

Find one that's POE so power is nice and easy. Make sure your cable length isn't too long or an issue for both data and power. Trickiest thing would just be making a weather proof and I guess thief proof home for it. Or just get an outdoor AP.

Thanks this is a very practical idea. I'm not necessarily going to need the coverage 24/7 so can just find something with a decent amount of power (even an indoor unit) and pull out for a temporary installation when needed.
