Hi all

I'm in search of a late 90s-era desktop PC for a software museum exhibit...

Backstory: In July I'm coming up to my 20yr anniversary working in the same place, albeit one which has gone through several mergers and acquisitions in that time. Our software is now fully cloud and web-based, but in the late 90s it was a standalone desktop application

For that occasion, I'm looking to re-create a 1998-era installation of the software using hardware of the day. So this will mean a beige desktop box with a beige keyboard and mouse with a ball and no scroll wheel.

Spec of desktop box is not particularly important, anything pentium class with 16MB or more will be sufficient. Doesn't need much disk, probably 300MB or so would be ample for my needs. But it needs to be reasonably cosmetically ok still... I'll be giving it a good clean up and ideally I'll get it looking as close to new as I can.

My budget is not large, a few tens of dollars is about what I'm thinking. I'm really just asking to see if there's anyone with something ancient sitting around that they haven't gotten around to disposing of yet, but that still will actually turn on.

Please, in keeping with the time, it needs to be beige. No black desktop stuff please, and no LCD screens. Must be CRT!

Disc images - I've got what I need - Windows 95, office 97, etc.

[Edit] Just to add that I'm in the Wellington area, happy to come and inspect/collect.

Thanks in advance!

Interesting. I've got heaps of old computers, though not that old - the 486's went to the recycling some time ago. The best I can do is an IBM Aptiva proudly bearing a 'Made for Windows 98' sticker. If it is not from the 90s, it is close. However, it is not a grand old tower, but SFF. No CRT to go with it - those also went to the recycling, though I might have a suitable keyboard and mouse (that don't work very well).

My first NEW PC (had an old 386 2nd hand previously - otherwise I was Amiga all the way) was in 98 - Was a Zenith Data Systems box from Harvey Norman. 15" CRT, solid as metal tower case, 32MB RAM, 3.2GB HDD, P2-266, onboard ATI video (which was damn good for what it was), 32x CD Rom, running Win98 - tried pushing for a Voodoo 2 (just been released) but budget couldnt cope :-p  Ended up with 2x Voodoo 2's a year or so later for some awesome SLI gaming ;)
