Hi all,

I have been asked to look for a new laptop for a friend for university the price range is up to 1300 and she would prefer an HP as she likes her current HP and favours another one. However I could probably sway her to a different make and model. I would like a few options that may be a little under the 1300 limit to try and get something decent that will save her some money.

Thank you all apologies if this is the wrong forum for this I realise usually this is usually for second hand goods, please tell me where you think it should have gone and I will post it there.

Here is my Quic referral https://account.quic.nz/refer/39513 if you are keen to change ISP and to get free setup (save $29). I will get a $50 credit if you use this.  Thank you very much if you use my link but I'm sure there are quite a few others who could share the same on here, no hard feelings if you use a different link.

Surface laptop 2 or the first gen on special would be my pick but there are many good ones out there.

Dell XPS 13, starts at $1800 but you can't go past it.

Surface Pro 6 otherwise.

I would be concerned about the surface reliability maybe the 2's are better?

There's no need to be concerned about the Surface Laptop 2 or Surface Pro 6's reliability, Surface Laptop 1 was a bit of an under performer.

I think the surface laptop 2 is a bit out of the affordable range for this user sorry. Unless anyone sees any killer deals on them.

In my experience, once you've got a few textbooks in the bag, you don't want to be carrying around a full sized laptop. Don't forget the weight of the charger as well. I recommend getting a secondhand MacBook Air. I switched from a 13" to an 11" midway through my degree and enjoyed having an even lighter laptop.

I found I used my laptop on campus much less than I thought I would have. If your friend intends to study more at home than at uni, she could consider getting a cheap lightweight computer to take to uni for basic tasks and another computer for home use.

The cheapest MacBook Air is $1569 with Apple's education pricing. At the moment you get free Beats headphones with an education purchase. They retail for up to $460. She could sell them and get a few hundred dollars back. Plenty of secondhand Airs on TradeMe within her price range as well.

What about this?

If it's just for studies it should go OK.

It's within budget and new at least.

The i5 surface laptop 2 was $1299 in the boxing day and black Friday sales. Surface devices regularly go on discount for 20% off. It's as might as a MacBook air so it just comes down to what os your prefer.

Sadly i brought my mrs a surface laptop one just before the two came out. I5 for $1299. I didn't realise the new one would drop so quick. She does love it though.
