Hey GZers!

I'm in the market for another 1U server, I'm finding my IBM System X to be quite loud. Anything similar available? Looking for Christchurch and surrounding areas. All servers considered (no, seriously. My bar is low. Anything quieter than the 7042-CR4 I have or something like a HP 1U that doesn't need any fans plugged in to operate would be great). The quieter, the better!

Hi! I'm TheoM, but you know that already. I run Linux mirrors in NZ together with 2degrees. Like a mirror added? PM me!

If you want "quiet" you need to move to 2U

1U will never to silent unless you make modifications.

Anything DDR2 era will sound like a tornado

Sure, 2U is okay also. the System X server really is a tornado haha. Anything up to 4U pretty much I'll consider, although at that point I would prefer something in more of a desktop FF. Still, anything goes, as long as it's quiet

Depending on your budget there is the HP Microserver(s) here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=248301

They're nearly silent and can be upgraded with 16gb ram and an Intel Xeon CPU. Also got dual Gigabit Ethernet and IPMI.

I think if I could choose any FF it would be rackmount > microserver > desktop in that order. at least then if they are mountable I can put them in a cage when I get around to it

Just a little update:

I'm looking for anything 2U and above, or if the BMC allows fanless operation, 1U also. Anyone got anything that would fit that spec?
