Long story but I'm back in Wellington and need to work out if our newly connected VDSL is faulty due to the modem (worked fine two months ago!), the internal wiring, or Chorus.  There's no DSL signal at all so I'm guessing it's Chorus or the modem.  Yes, I have Scotchlocked some cables with RJ11 plugs on them direct to the incoming lines and that hasn't helped.  No, the copper hasn't been used for a few years so who knows what's wrong between us and the cabinet/exchange.

If you're somewhere between Karori and Khandallah and I could pick up an HG659 or other VDSL capable device that you no longer want, that would be wonderful - please PM me.

I've got a box of them. Want one? Flick me a PM and I can bring one to work with me.

Edit: Else if you're willing to drive to Paraparaumu you can grab one off me.

I think I've found a modem I can pick up locally.  If that falls through I'll ask @michaelmurfy.

I've also found a hook by the ETP with no wire attached.  What's the bet the line from the ETP to the road went walkies at some point in the last 5 years...

If it helps, they usually have very cheap modems at Johnsonville's Cash Converters.

Do you mean that the house should have overhead cable to the pole and it's not there?

I had vdsl connected to a house that hadn't had a working line for a few years. The cable pair it should have been on had been "borrowed" to fix a neighbour's faulty line at some point. So we had to get the next best spare connected before anything happened.

It's actually a church building (I'm the new minister; just finished my training last month) but yes, they haven't had a copper line in use for a few years.

It's slap bang in the middle of a fibre area but due to a records issue the address checker said no fibre so we had to order VDSL.  Chorus is hopefully going to say we can get fibre soon...

Well congrats on completing your training and finding a job!

Given that it's probably a records issue, perhaps speaking with @ChrousNZ will help get it solved faster than fluffing around with the copper? I had a records issue (MDU when not) and speaking with @ChorusNZ helped break out of the infinite loop I seemed to be stuck in. :)

Its very possible the line has been pilfered. If so its probably going to be a faster fix to just sort the Fibre records issue.

@deadlyllama flick us your address and ill look into it, hopefully we can get you connected sooner rather than later 😄

The copper line was indeed goneburgers.  Chorus have fixed their records issue and we've placed an order for fibre through our RSP (Voyager).  Unfortunately there are trees in the way of the aerial fibre path, which probably had grown up around the copper line.
