Hi, I have a Surface Laptop 2, will this dock work on there? I see there is also a model 1749, is that for different Surfaces devices, or a later model of the 1661?

Thanks

https://www.windowscentral.com/should-you-buy-surface-dock-surface-laptop-2

Surface Dock 2 is recently released and Surface Laptop 2 appears to be compatible. Allows 2x 4K 60Hz output.

Surface Dock 1 doesn't - but if you are not pushing 2 4k screens then should be fine. I have Dock 1 and does what it is advertised to do.

Thanks for that link - I read something about this today, but I couldn't see how the Dock 2, which is a USB-C device, would connect to the Surface Laptop 2, which has USB-A (and Surface Connector).  I had (incorrectly) assumed that the Dock 2 connected to the laptop via USB-C, which is on the newest Surface devices, but it appears not! It is still via the Surface Connector!

Now to worry if I need a USB-C dock, or just the older dock from CrashAndBurn.

MS just released two new docks.  Surface dock 2 which uses the surface connect and has usb c on the dock.  They also released the travel dock which uses usb c to connect to the device.

I haven't checked but I thought only the latest gen surface devices fully supported the surface dock 2.  Dock 2 is also not yet available for pre order and when it is it will be well north of $300.

Here is some info on usb c docks:

https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2019/12/02/docks-that-work-on-thunderbolt-3-and-usb-c-with-titan-ridge-jhl7440/

I looked at all this for my surface go.  I really want one usb c dock that will work with my work laptop (TB2) and my surface devices.  To get that you need to spend top dollar so in the end I just have a TB2 dock for the work laptop and a surface dock for the surface.

Surface connect is a much better physical connector than usb c.  The usb c on the work laptops is always getting bent and munched.  Charging is also faster on the sruface dock.

Long story short, for a surface device you want the surface dock.  As long as you are not trying to drive two 4k screens at 60 hz then you will be happy with the cheaper, current surface dock.

Agree - and to promote the item for sale, I think it's reasonably priced / noel leeming has both docks on sale now / and this is half price. I would have bought this if I haven't one already.
