As part of a recent sidegrade of friends+neighbours computers I've got 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR3 Kingston KVR1333D3N9 surplus which I can't use, but could use older DDR2 PC2-5300 or PC2-6400 of the same capacity (2x2GB), or 2x4GB if available.

Auckland, but given that they'll fit in a standard envelope it's probably cheaper that way than travelling somewhere to swap them.

Just remembered, it currently has 2x1GB and 1x2GB with one slot empty (don't ask me, it was like that when I got here), so 3x2GB would also work. The preferred target is 8GB via some means or other, e.g. 2x4GB or 3x2GB.

Does this look suitable? 3 x 2GB

Looks just right, but now I've got an embarrassment of riches :-). I've got an offer from someone else which should fill the gap, but I'll keep this one in mind in case there's a problem, thanks!

Absolutely no worries. I'm scrapping my core2 quad if you're looking for a CPU.

Ooh, tempting, thanks, but it's a ThinkCentre M57 or similar so I'd have to check whether it supports that particular CPU, do you have the model number? Some of them will take quads but they need to be lower-TDP models.

In any case the main thing is more RAM, at the moment the system is quite disk I/O-bound.

Well, that and maybe an SSD, but there's a limit to how far you can push a system this old.

It's a q8200.

Thanks! So that's a 95W TDP, probably a bit too much for the SFF M57. There's posts from people running quads in some of the M57 line, but that's presumably the tower models so it's probably safer not to risk it.
