Hi all,

I am moving house soon and unfortunately I have to downsize my TV, which means I need to get rid of my amazing 65" Panasonic Plasma.  I have had this for 5 years, brought new from Dick Smith, it is in excellent condition, comes with all accessories and even the box.

The thing is, is there are market for this?  If so, what would someone be willing to pay?  Also, it is HEAVY (62kg according to the box) so its either pickup only from Ellerslie, or you organise a carrier to pickup.

Is $700 in unrealistic?

It's unrealistic for a 1080p TV when you can get a 4K 65" for similar pricing on special.

And that's the problem I thought I would see - generally people look as prices over specs, and the market for 65" THX Plasma sets would be very small :-)

Any feedback on what you (or others) think it would be worth?

I have a 65" 4K LCD LG that I'm planning to put up for $500 soon, or $650 with LG soundbar.  I'd say you're less than that.  That's based on what you can buy new and age of mine, which is younger than yours.  I get the Plasma benefits, but as you say your targeting a niche buyer that might never come along, verses getting what you can from Joe Bloggs 2nd hand buyer.

I make use of the TradeMe Expired Listings search for things like this.

Here is a sample search...  but obviously have a play with search terms.

I have exactly that model Plasma sitting on the wall of my garage that I use once or twice a year because when I tried to sell it a year or so ago no-one was prepared to offer more than $200 for it :-(

Cheers - N

Interested! :)

Where abouts are you though?
Do you have more info on the soundbar as I'd take that by itself if you'd be happy to sell it separately?

$700 is well worth it, don't forget these were the pinnacle of Plasma and one of the very best models that Panasonic made. Ive seen same model go for over $1000 on trademe earlier this year. Forget rubbish LED 4K cheap garbage as a comparison, Plasma PQ is only matched by OLED.

Prices have dropped quite a bit recently. 3 years ago you'd get just over $1600. Now it's typically in the $200-500 range.

I've got the Panasonic 65" Plasma P65ST60Z. The VT is a very slight step up. Same panel, think it's just calibration from memory. ZT had a special coating and was the top end model.

The 65" plasma is going to have better picture quality than a 65" 4K LCD at any reasonable viewing distance. But the average buyer probably doesn't know that.

You sure you can't fit the TV? Going smaller than 65" is just wrong...

I have 3 minor complaints about my panel compared to my previous much older plasma that didn't exhibit these issues.

  1. The plasma 'shimmer' is more noticeable. But can't be seen from normal viewing distance so it's fine I guess.
  2. Temporary 'burn in' / image retention from things like OSD menus (high contrast) can stick around for quite a while, maybe up to 45 second (old panel wasn't noticeable or was only a couple seconds). Not something that's usually noticeable with normal viewing.
  3. If you have a scene where say a person was talking to the camera and there's a horizontal light colored line in the background that same line causes a colour shift across in the persons face. I'm not sure why it does that in a plasma (no back light, each pixel individually addressable)? My old one didn't.

I'm wondering if your VT model is the same? Maybe it's a setting I don't have right, but same issues on 2/2 panels I've used.

$700 is well worth it,

To a niche market.

To Joe Bloggs who just wants a large screen, they'll see its plasma and 9/10 people know plasma is "old and power hungry", turning them off paying the premium for the features/quality.

We have two Panasonic plasma TV's, been absolutely fantastic, but when they've had their day and it comes time to replace, it'll be something newer and LED/OLED based.

@timbosan  Put on TM at that price, highlight the features/quality and you might hit it lucky or at least get a feel for what the market is doing at the moment.

Yep, you have to have the TV show up in front of someone who knows what it is and what it does, and why it's different.  If you've got the time to wait for that to happen, fine, if not then take the bird in the hand and be done with it.

As a recent comparison, I sold my 60” ST here on GZ back in Jan this year for $300 - kinda wished I’d kept it and sold our entry-level 4K HDR LCD, but glad it went to someone who wanted it and appreciated the benefits of plasma. If you don’t sell it here you may still find a buyer on TM, but just be realistic as to what you may get for it...

The price may need a bit of tweaking, but hopefully it'll sell if you can get a buyer who knows their stuff.

We are thinking of upgrading our 50" Panasonic plasma with a 4K OLED telly. But instead of selling that, we'll probably be selling the 4K LG LCD telly we have upstairs, as the Panny has a vastly superior picture in terms of colour reproduction, ability to handle movement in scenes, and viewing angle.

And depending on how far you sit from the telly, 1080p vs 4K can become a non-issue.

I still have 3 VT plasma (2x65 and a 40) and they are still excellent but yeah niche market now. Took an $8000 oled to beat the picture and they are still better than many tv today but agree sadly it is a niche market. Try make it fit is a great suggestion tbh. I had 4 at once stage and did sell 2 years ago a 50 inch for $500 but the person knew the tv background and wanted it.

Wow, so many replies! Thanks all!

So I have listed it on Trademe, will see what happens.  Hopefully someone who appreciates / wants a panel with a better PQ than an LED will see it.  Failing that I will have to see if I can make it fit, although I do also have my Kef XQ floor-standing speakers to fit in, so it might be a choice between decent speakers and a 50" 4K LCD, or a 65" Plasma with a crappy soundbar.  Tough choices!
