Asking here as people I may trust more than TradeMe/Facebook marketplace.

In Auckland looking for an affordable but fast/reliable laptop for a 9 year old. Basic web browsing but also entry level gaming etc.

Has anyone got anything they're willing to part with?

Edit: What's your budget?

HP Elitebook/ProBooks & Lenovo Thinkpad T series can be found on TradeMe at bargain prices, usually listed privately (as opposed to "In Trade" commercial traders).

These highly durable Corporate Grade machines are commonly sold by reburbishers like PB Tech, often at a premium of $200-$300 vs private listings.

The $270 ProBook below is a good example of what you can get for your buck.

old laptops won't do entry level gaming as 99% they will overheat

new ones also overheat but as they're faster it still works albeit at lower performance.

generally - mid to low end laptop all overheat, most high end also overheat when gaming. i own about a laptop every few months.

I have an old t series in the drawer if you are interested.  It won't do much gaming past rodblox given it's a dual core but pm me if interested.

Cheers for the replies.  I'm more familiar with desktop GPU/CPU's.

What's a reasonably good CPU for a laptop. I have a 3.8Ghz AMD 3600X on my desktop as a comparison and it exceeds how it'll be used if compared to a laptop.

Never gamed but w/a mind apparently equivalent a 9yo might wonder if macOS is easier to navigate vs. Windows.

Can pop Windows onto a MacBook (like the one linked below) easily enough.

As said, 'mind of a 9yo' - excuse us if way off 🤣

An Intel i7-4702 Quad Core, which is what the ProBook 840 G1 I linked to has installed, along with a dedicated GPU.

Admittedly for gaming you'll always get better value going with a desktop.
