Hello,

does anyone have an i7 4790 or similar sitting in a drawer they would want to part with? I'm only looking to spend about $50, as I'm in the position of $$ vs perf against my current i5.

Probably need the cooler too as the i5 one is quite petite.

Seem to be a few people on a certain yellow auction site that forget that these CPUs launched in 2014.

Those old higher end CPUs hold their value surprisingly well. You might have better luck looking for a damaged SFF PC with one of those CPUs.

Yeah, I found 3/4th gen CPUs still keep their value - got a couple in the house still kicking along happily. I only upgraded to a 6th gen recently :D

Because they were decently grunty. They still sell for nearly $200 on Aliexpress, which is about the cheapest place on the planet for old CPU's

I think most people have finally realized that for general users (not hardcore gamers), slowdowns are not primarily due to the CPU, but instead memory, type of storage, and other factors.

I've used the kid's 10-year-old desktop (with decent ram, SSD, etc.) as emergency backup for a couple of days when my main PC spat the dummy, and 95% of the time, I struggled to notice the difference.

If you cant source a i7 for a reasonable price some times you can get the equivalent Xeon's off eBay or Aliexpress for a more realistic price.

i7s very much follow a bell curve for pricing. High when they're first released, at their cheapest when they're old stock but still easily accessible via retail, then high again as people want to upgrade their old i3/i5 PCs without needing a complete Mobo/CPU/Ram upgrade. 4th,5th & 6th gen are all currently at this point.

Compatible motherboards also tend to follow this curve as people try to keep old PCs going

I'm just going to wait. The ones on TM don't seem to shift so I don't believe the NZ market will pay those prices.

When we needed one and some ram to get an old PC back running that needed ISA slots it was cheaper for the CPU and ram to buy an ex lease dunger PC and just pull those from it than to get used CPU and ram off trademe. That was a 4th or 5th gen from memory as that was the newest board we could locate with ISA on it a few years back. Had to amazon the motherboard on its own. I think its still running just fine.
