My younger brother would like to learn to code but he doesn't have access to a computer. If anyone has an old laptop that's good enough to run Linux or Windows without being a total dog and wants a productive way to get rid of it please let me know. I'm not sure he has space for a desktop and monitor. I might end up getting him a Raspberry Pi 4 if I can't find a laptop, but then I'd get keyboard and mouse which adds to the cost.

I can probably give you one if an older core duo is ok.  just need to clear some dust and check on them - not sure if its 2 or 4 gb ram

got one that battery needs to be removed to work - needs power connected. - this is NZ keyboard.

have another that's in pretty good condition but has UK keyboard - basically the "@" is in a different place

Hi

If you can't find one try shop.remarkit.co.nz. If the ones in the shop are not in the budget range may pay to send them an email. They usually have more stuff than is in the shop.

Cheers Oliver

Anything that can run a web browser and an IDE such as Visual Studio Code without crawling like a dog would be awesome. Linux works ok on 2GB RAM, 4GB is better. Needing to be plugged in is fine, maybe better because it will stay in one spot. Also the keyboard layout doesn't matter, whichever works better :)

From my recollection you're Wellington based - you could try out Recycling for Charity at 1 King Charles Drive, Upper Hutt (on trademe as "rfcltd") https://recyclingforcharity.co.nz/ - they usually have a stack of older laptops and if you go in person you could probably negotiate a deal.

I picked up an HP T630 thin client device from them for around $75 that I put Linux on. Works like a charm. Will also run Chrome OS Flex.

The NZ keyboard is the better one spec wise.

Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 - Core 2 Duo -T6570/320GB HD/2GB RAM - Win7 pro licence has been updated to win10 pro.
RAM is single stick and system should support another stick.

Just making sure its all working OK now but it seems all good - except battery fault.

Let me know if you want this and I'll do a system wipe.

@mmlakeman has generously donated an older but well spec'd laptop that's in good condition. Thanks very much, it's much appreciate. Thanks to all who offered as well, I'm not surprised by the generosity but it is appreciated :)
