Hi
Have you considered renting one out for a few weeks to try.
We got ours from affordable fitness in ChCh and chose the rent to own option. They no longer exist I think.
Not a fancy one but with a motorised incline.
Make sure that you you can fit it in through the doorway. I had to dismantle the treadmill arms and console when moving house.
The doors in the new house were too narrow.
Choose one that has a larger walking/running area and better cushioning.
Few things you need to consider (off the top of my head):
Height & weight
walking or running?
climb or no climb?
all out sprinting or jog?
how much space do you have?
what's your budget?
Rent first. Some rental places let you take the rental cost off the price if you end up buying. Don't forget to think about maintenance.
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
Psilan: It's all about budget with these things.
Some of the ones around 1-2k can't be run on for more than an hour at a time, so depends on what you want.
We ended up with an assualt airrunner.
Expensive, incline running, no power required. Bluetooth controller can connect to zwift etc without any mods or add-ons.
Thanks all for the advice have decided to rent one and see how it goes before I make a sizeable investment too many options and I need to do more research on the IFIT subscription which looks interesting
Do not be tempted to go for the cheap options for a treadmill or elliptical or cross trainer. If you use them regularly they will simply wear out, and faster than you would expect. They may not seem cheap at the ~1k - 2k mark, but trust me from experience they most certainly are. We have gone through a few and swore off them.
Sometimes you can get super deals at places like Torpedo 7 who are just dumping end of line stock. Alternatively try Trademe for people who bought and hardly used and are now just getting rid of them. We got a $7k machine for a few thousand that way.
One thing to make sure of is whether you can get parts here in NZ. The major brands sold at places like Elite Fitness should have parts available here. The cheaper lines sold at places like Torpedo7 don't, as we discovered the hard way, so you're simply one broken clip away from owning a piece of scrap metal.
And as someone else mentioned make sure you consider where you will be putting it, some are delivered made up and others they can erect on site at your place. If it is already made up just check it can be carried where you want it. We hired a man in a van to deliver our elliptical and it was massive and very heavy. He got it as far as our lounger and basically said stuff off when we explained it was meant to get downstairs (to be fair I think it would take a miracle for him to have got it down). It now lives in our lounge lol.

michaelmurfy: Just another block of advice if you do live close to a gym consider the cost of renting vs a gym membership. With a gym you get access to a whole lot more machines and weights etc so can get a more complete workout if that is your thing. A treadmill is only a single workout.
It all comes down to what your goals are. I know many are happy with sticking with just a treadmill and that’s totally fine too.
+1
My gym only cost $6.99 /week and since I WFH, I can pick the least busy time to go. Works for me as I mainly do 70% weights and 30% time to cardio. Plus I like the idea that the machines will be maintained by someone else and no worry/hassle of if something breaks.
We went with the Prorunner x4 from T7, doing well.
