I’m after a couple of AirTags; I’m happy to purchase either new or second-hand/used, if someone here on GZ has any they no longer need.

Alternatively, if anyone else is wanting to get a couple of AirTags at a lower price, I’d be happy to go in on a pack of four and split the cost.

Thanks.

I don’t have any to sell, but if you want a cheap option, and you’re happy to forego the fancy Precision Finding, you can buy Find My compatible trackers with replaceable batteries from Aliexpress for about $15 including shipping:

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mqJRjfA

I have one and it works perfectly in the native Find My app in iOS.

Thanks, I wasn’t aware there were compatible products out there. If I’d known I’d have looked at those, but in the interim another GZ member has contacted me and we’ve gone halves on a pack of four, so under $50 a tag vs $60. Would have rather paid $15 or so!

Edit: That said, having now looked at them it wouldn’t have worked for my user case, for which the tags need to be exactly the same shape as the Apple ones (as they’re hidden in a cavity shaped for the AirTag). For other purposes, though, I imagine they’d work fine…

Do those work the same as Apple airtags?

Yes. The only feature they lack is Precision Finding, which only genuine Apple AirTags have. Other than that, they pair and appear in iOS exactly like normal AirTags.

Shame as the Precision Finding would be helpful for someone like me who lacks directional hearing.

Still, I've ordered some off AE for next to nothing and can at least now know roughly where some of my cr@p is!

Sorry if I'm a bit late with this, but you might find https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ic_DOIdkjo interesting. I think one of the two it compares is the iTag mentioned above.

@rattewisday - I ordered from Ascent, which seems to have the cheapest price for a four pack - $185 with free shipping; arrived really quickly too.

Can you please share what the Device detail shows? Does it have a link to the iTag app or is it shown more like a genuine AirTag?

Edit: Never mind - it appears to be MFi Certified (astounding!) at https://mfi.apple.com/account/accessory-search as Trangjan Finder

Looks to me to be in the MFI register as a TingTing iTag (190835224549), which matches the device info, where the manufacturer is listed as Shenzen Tingting Technology Co, and the model is iTag.

OK, I ordered from AE - and I wanted round ones that are the same form factor as Apple iTags so went for these:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005580802468.html

They arrived promptly but... they do not work (on my up-to-date iPhone 11). Adding the tag searches but never finds it.

Turns out here is a companion iFindU app in the iTunes store - that would be a pain if it is necessary as you want to be in the Apple Find My system but I tried this app... it doesn't work either.

I tried everything. Battery replacement, rebooting etc. Nothing.

Will dispute with AE and next time will make sure the item says MFI and Find My compatible.

Yeah I suspect you’ve purchased something that wasn’t quite what you had hoped/expected.

It doesn’t seem like the Aliexpress description says Find My compatible anywhere, so technically the sellers description may not have anything wrong with it.

The more square shaped ones I linked to above most certainly work with the Apple Find My app with zero hassle.

You are dead right about the compatibility issue. However they are not working with the IFindYu app either.

Subsequently ordered one of the iTag trackers as discussed earlier and it does indeed work pretty well. I can see my car keys have moved from the valet desk at Auckland airport to an off airport building!
However I’m often looking for lost things in the house so might have to shell out for some AirTags and give precision finding a go. Not very good at locating sounds.
