I'm interested in upgrading my CPU to close to the best available on my existing platform, if there's anyone making the leap to the latest generation. I'd prefer a Ryzen 5800 X3D, 5900x or 5950x - but would consider a 5800x if the price were right. I really only need the CPU itself, not a CPU/RAM/motherboard combo.

I'd imagine anyone with a 5800X3D has done so to extend the (gaming) life of their own platform, (so probably not looking to sell) and anyone with a 5900X or 5950X who is "making the leap to the latest generation" would probably want to sell their entire platform, (CPU, MB, Ram etc)

TBH the current new cost of the 5800X3D at ~$570 is pretty reasonable. A drop in upgrade for AM4 that gets you average fps very close to any of the new generation of CPUs, Hardware Unboxed

And that's all worst case scenario, using an RTX 4090 @ 1080P! If you're playing at 1440P or 4K, or using anything less than an RTX 4090 the difference would be very minimal.

Long story short, just buy a new one! ;-)

I just had the same question. Bought a 5700X + a Thermalright Peerless Assasin 120SE fan @ Computerlounge. Upgrade will be next week. 5800X is too expensive, as is 5800X3D. 5900x if you need multithreaded.

I picked up a good deal on a used 5900x a few weeks ago but it arrived damaged and I had to return it so I'm looking for a replacement. If I can't find a decent price on a used one then I'll end up buying new - but retailers haven't dropped their prices on the higher end Zen 3 processors with the release of Zen 4 presumably because there will be others in the same position hoping to get a bit more life out of their existing platform. It can't hurt to ask.

What CPU are you coming from? The 5700x is $319 at the moment. That is about what I am willing to invest but I am also not a big Gamer. That will last me 1-2y and then I'll do a whole system upgrade. So I rather save the $300 more for the 5900x to spend on the next system. I purposefully bought the cooler with the ability to use on AM5 (don't like water cooling).

I'll be making a fairly big jump already - coming from a 2600. I realise any CPU is going to be a considerable upgrade from where I am now - I'm just envisioning a few more cores will help me wring just a little more life out of the upgrade before having to replace everything next time.

Depends on your usage model. I am coming from a 3600 and am keen to see what the upgrade does. But for me it's more about staying current. You'd need some serious tasks you're doing to use more than 8CPUs. Gaming is probably happy with 4-6 CPUs. More Mhz is better. I'll probably get my parts tomorrow and install them. will let you know how I go. For me it would be much more worthwhile upgrading the graphics card as that will be my bottleneck going forward.

So, got my package and installed it today. VERY happy with what I see. Out of the box Cinebench R23 is 13375 multi core and 1526 single. With some minor tweaking (conservative) I got to 15681 multi core (single core would be the same). But I get all 8 CPUs running at 4660Mhz constantly on Cinebench R23. Geekbench 6 tuned is 2200/11470 (they say stock 5700x is 2086/9692 and a 5800X is 2140/10257). I need to do some more tweaking and testing but so far very happy can't wait to do a bit of gaming although I think the GPU will be slowing me down now.

The Thermalright Peerless Assasin 120 SE (ARGB because they had none without) is the star of the show though. So far with everything I have thrown at it I haven't seen temps above 68 degrees yet! And It didn't even ramp beyond 60% fan speed yet. So there is LOTS of headroom. It's a BIG UNIT though. Could just get it to fit in my mid tower. But I don't like water cooling and for air at the price it's FANTASTIC.

Good to hear you're pleased with the purchase. I bought a Noctua NH-D15 to go with my upgrade and it also just barely fits on my motherboard and in my case. It's not getting much of a workout on my old 65W CPU however. Hopefully it'll get a bit more of a challenge soon!

Nice! All my other fans are Noctua. But the Thermalright is as quiet and has similar cooling stats. Playing a game now it only peaked at 57 degrees and was running at 4.7Ghz all the time across most CPUs. So I can still play with the tuning a bit more.

Good call. Good air cooling definitely the way to go unless you're into extreme overclocking. Fewer points of failure, and even if the fan dies, just cable tie a new one on and you're back up and running. No faffing around with pumps carking it, and cracked piping leaking onto and borking your gear. Don't ask me now I know about this. 😂

I don't think I would bother with watercooling any more. I played with it for years, I had a dual-CPU Athlon XP rig that was watercooled and I went away for a weekend and came back to a failed impeller on the pump. There was still enough convective cooling (because in those days the CPU overheat protection was pretty minimal) to keep the CPUs from being damaged - but completely agree that it's just a lot more work to drain loops before you work on things and these days you don't get much difference in performance anyways.
