Before I go ahead and buy new, I thought I would check whether anyone has any surplus to requirements they want to sell?

Haha, good luck.

I've been on the lookout for some 2nd hand deals on TradeMe for a few months now. Nothing has come up yet. (just one at about retail $$)

Seems like most buyers are keeping them (or not bothering to on-sell)

They're not as pretty as the Apple ones and long term longevity is debatable, but you can pick up some super cheap Find My compatible trackers on Aliexpress.

I've got a pack of Apple ones and a few Ali ones, they all work the same.

Out of interest, what do people use their air tags on?

I have one that I store in my Vespa in case its moved when I'm in the shops and I know people use them to track luggage while flying but where else are they useful? I suspect like my Vespa people would use them on expensive bicycles especially with the cost of e-bikes but what other uses do people find for them?

We're not an Apple family (only a few iPads) so the only ones we have are on our e-bikes - they're mounted in a drink bottle cage that's designed for the purpose (as otherwise not much space on a bike to hide them). https://www.evocycles.co.nz/Product/525259/

I've been waiting for ages for the Android Find My Device compatible trackers to be released - Chipolo and Pebblebee (at least) have developed them but there's been a long delay by Google in releasing the necessary update (I've read they're still working with Apple to ensure interoperability of detection, or something like that). At that point I'll replace our Tiles with these; perhaps the AirTags too if I can find somewhere to hide the new ones on the bikes!

They won't do precision finding mode though.

I have had AE ones stop working on me - it seems they hoover down the battery. My Apple ones are still all going strong.

Yeah, this. I got a "MiLi" one on Ali last year, no UWB, and it also just stopped working about 2-3 months in.

I've got a pack of 4 from Apple, and had no issues, battery lasts a few years.

I put one in a car and on the keychain, another on a bike and one in my laptop bag.

I have one on my keys, one in my suitcase and one in my backpack. The keys are probably the most important one as I worry about losing them while out running and not being able to get back into the house, although admittedly that's never actually happened.

I have one on my keys, we also have one on the dog, in case he escapes (it's on a special holder on his collar), both kids have them on their car keys.

The one on SWMBO's car keys means I know where she is without logging into internet banking at looking at credit card transactions.

We’ve got one on our dog. Must have imho.

Just be sure to remove when taking the dog to day care places incase they don’t remove the collar when playing with other dogs. Would also not advise if you’ve got more than one dog.

I have quite a few of them, in bicycles (inside the frames), in wallets, bags etc, but also in most of my more expensive power tools in the garage. I have the either hidden in the cases under the plastic, or embedded in the tool itself, take it apart, glue or tape it inside and put back together.

Had a friend who had stuff go missing from his property a lot so I placed one inside a power tool, which promptly got stolen and led us to the thief. Got the tool back but police wouldn’t do anything else.

Have also used them in luggage with good success.
