Peoples,

I am trying to find a particular model of Western Digital hard drive.

We have someone who has managed to cause damage to theirs and need parts to try to recover the data from the physical device (yeah yeah told them to backup until I was blue in the face ....)

Anyway looking for (dead or alive), ...

Western Digital 120 GB Sata 2.5" HDD

Model: WD1200BEVS
DCM code: FACT2HBD
If possible factory stamped on or around July 2006

Any help or ideas welcome

Cheers

Lee

From my experience this does not work. I tried doing so with a second drive brought at the same time as one with damaged controller. Did not work.

Only way that will work is getting the data recovery people involved but that is costly.

I dont intend to fix the drive myself. I need a possible selection of doner drives to allow recovery via professional services.

Ive recovered data from 'dead' drives a number of times by putting the drive in the freezer for a few hours/overnight. Have a look on the web. I was very sceptical but its worked on three drives.

You need to have the drive in a sealed bag so moisture doesnt get in and I also found sitting the drive on an ice pack whilst I was accessing it also kept it running for longer.

Each time I had it going for over an hour which was plenty of time to copy off any files I needed to get.

In this case that would not help. The heads on the unit seemed to park in an incorrect location, that location being lodged in the plastic support housing within the part area.

My guess is that the drive was at max speed and the laptop was tossed onto a firm bed or some such item (sofa) while in the middle of commiting data to the disk. Drive did its normal shock reset recovery thing, snapped the heads back to the park position but got lodged in the plastic head housing.

Result is a bent/damaged lower head.

Cheers
