Some friends in the US want some and asked if I could bring some over. Trouble is, I can only find Bovril yeast extract in the supermarkets. Anybody know where I might find the meat extract version?

Thanks

Try South African shops. In Auckland I know of Beef on the Beach in Highland Park, Out of Africa in Botany Downs and near Mitre 10 Mega, and Fred's Fine Food in Brown's Bay.

In South Africa you get Marmite (same bottle and label as the Australian Our Mate) and Bovril. SA has strong ties with UK.

You also get "stock powder" for making meet sauce. I think the brand is OXO and available in beef and chicken, but probably not what they want.

What about OnTrays, the South African shop in Petone? They have food from all over the world.

Thanks for the suggestions. The only one I can try is the one is Petone (Thanks Mauricio) since I live in Wellington. I should have posed this question last week when I was in Auckland for the weekend!

The people want the extract, not the powder. No idea why - just trying to do a favour. Strange that they local supermarkets sell imported yeast extract when there are so many other local brands, but don't import the less common beef extract.

It's due to Foot and Mouth as the beef extract from England is a bit of a no-no for MAF, I can't give blood for the same reason!!

That sort of makes sense but given how far away from the cow the extract is, production wise, it's so remote that the disease could have survived. Oh well - I will have to tell them the bad news.

There was an 'English' shop in Wellington where you could buy it but its since closed. There is another in Palmerston North which is doing great business.

My wife has started getting Marmite from Pac n Save now though and apparantly they have been slowly introducing an 'English' section so perhaps try them in Petone.

They even have Jaffa Cakes now :) Although $20 for something costing a pound in England is taking the pish somewhat.

All supermarkets in Auckland seem to sell it but it's not the old Beef extract that it used to be as some above said that F&M put paid to exporting to NZ the original formula. It still basically tastes the same..

Depending on where you're going in the States, you could pop up to Canada and grab it there. I used to use it all the time, it was great stuff to use as it was liquid and you didn't have to worry about the crystals melting. I lived in Vancouver so I'm not sure other provinces have it.

Im not certain but Im pretty sure its back to using beef extract again. It was removed a few years ago (they said to make it suitable to vegetarians but Marmite - the cynics because of BSE).

But once the EU lifted the ban on british beef the beef extract was put back in as too many people complained about the taste.

I only saw it in New World and it was yeast extract then. I will look around this weekend at some specialty stores.
