We are doing a road trip in the US in May. Hiring a GPS from the rental car company for a two-week trip does not make sense from an economics point of view. I have been looking at smart-phone-based solutions but for various reasons would prefer a stand-alone unit.

So then I was looking at buying a unit once we get there. Then I thought I would ask here whether anyone has a decent unit with relatively recent maps that they might be willing to hire to us at a mutually-agreeable rate.
I would indemnify the hirer against damage or loss.

This is just a thought - it might sound a bit cheeky (but I'm not a cheeky person)  but also nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

You pick up something off EBay for next to nothing?

I have never been to the states but assuming somethings are similar, I have just googled Walmart & GPS and found a shipload of affordable options TomTom 130S (3.5") @ USD$54, TomTom XL (4.3") @ USD$98, all will come with latest map guarantees (although you will probably need a internet connection and PC to action)
