Hi There,

I currently have a car PC and am looking for a new PC GPS navigation software to use on it.

I currently use Goldfinger PC Guider and am getting a bit sick of it. The maps are crap to say the least and when going on long trips (wellington to Auckland) I have to change the maps several times due to them not being all in one.

I like the look of the Garmin GPS units and was wondering if there is anything similar for PC.

I have friends that use the Garmin software on PDA's and its great. Can this be used on a PC or is there anything of similar quallity?

I dont know if there are actually any decent PC based navigation programs available (well none that Ive ever seen). Im sure Garmin must have something as Ive used Garmin PC software before to load maps onto a PDA. Maybe they have a PC version of City navigator or something similar.

Thats sucks about Goldfinger not being on one map. Is it an old version, Im pretty sure when I looked at it it would route from Auckland to Wellington in one go (this was the PDA version).

Anyway, I dont have too much advice apart from last night I noticed on a car audio forum that some guys had a Windows Mobile emulator (part of the SDK) running TomTom on a in car PC. So thats one solution but requires some decent software in order to work.

So I guess if you could find a decent Windows Mobile version you could probably run it on your PC.

For the relative low cost of GPS devices now, why not just get a Navman/TomTom? By the time you fiddle around with your in car PC you'd be better of just buying a GPS.

I was thinking of trying to find an emulator and run the Garmin software like this.

Reason I dont want to get a GPS unit is because I hate things cluttering up my dash. The car PC was installed to take care of everything in one go (music, video, GPS, engine tuning software, traffic webcams, cell phone control etc).

If your PC is running Windows you may want to consider getting Garmin Mobile PC and teaming it with the superb free Open NZ Maps

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Garmin PC is the way i would like to go but after reading around it looks like the way they have secured the software prevents a lot of things being done, ie testing on one PC and installing on another, importing a whole lot of maps. It even sounds like its a bit of a mish to get maps in from Mapsorce.

Nothings ever easy is it!!!
