could someone please let me know where I could post questions about gps/satnav issues please? I'm based in the UK and here I use TOMTOM on my HTC TyTn windows mobile device. However I cannot seem to get maps for tomtom for NZ, soI was wondering what people in  NZ use.

I thought we had a GPS forum....? Oh well.... your question is perfectly welcome here, and im sure you will get some good replies.

I use a Navman ICN330, which can be had ready to go with full NZ 3d moving maps/gps unit/colour screen/suction mount for $399. (at dse.co.nz). Some retailers have older versions of the same unit for higher cost with 2D maps, so be careful.

I got mine on boxing day sales for $350, which I believe made it the cheapest all-in-one GPS SatNav in NZ. Works great, and it means my Pocket PC (HTC Apache, then a Treo 700wx) isnt burdened with GPS duties too (too many eggs in one basket if you ask me!).

I had a look at Uniden GPS SatNav in DSE the other week, and really liked what I saw too...  but havent actually used one.

IIIRC TomTom was running a closed beta with New Zealand maps... But you should consider using Navman. They have New Zealand maps and driving directions - both in their own Pocket PC or software only.

Another options are the just released Google Maps for Windows Mobile, and soon available Nokia smart2go.

Thanks. I've heard good things about Navman. FYI I use a Holux GPSLim 386 as my GPS receiver and I must admit its outstanding receiver. I just stick it my pocket or glove box and bluetooth with the HTC. No need to arials and line of site and and all that. So really I was only going to consider a software only solution.

ICN 330 on dse.co.nz

is that what you were looking for?

I love mine to bits... though its just a basic model - just navigation with door to door directions, voice guidance, and a few configurable settings - no fluff, just the core job of basic navigation.

You can buy the Navman software only if you want. I had it working on my HP iPaq h3970, which I gave away in one of the Geekzone chats...

The software used to be avaialble at DSE here in New Zealand, but I can't see it. Expansys Australia still lists it (http://www.expansys.co.nz/p.aspx?i=134277). Look for Navman SmartST for Pocket PC.

Thanks I'll check this out. My device is windows mobile 5 and Navman in the Uk say they don't have anything for this platform.

In this case they might be right. Windows Mobile 5 uses a different ActiveSync and Navman was silly enough to use the old ActiveSync to activate and install the product - stupid decision. They seem to have left the product behind and not updated it for Windows Mobile 5 new ActiveSync ways...

arrrggg! What is is it with hardware companies - IBM took decades to change? Can't they see how smartphones and PDAs are more and more likely to have the power to do what they do and give them new markets? Same as bespoke computing and comodity computing (e.g. RAID). I think companies really need to to understand how software and ever more powerful hardware will forever be making in roads into bespoke hardware.

Anyway with that off my chest - please could anyone recommend best places to buy sat nav in NZ? I've been to DSE in Albany (in Nov) but are there other places to visit? Is online purchasing cost effective? Here in the UK I tend to buy online and often import tings from Hong kong.
