I'm thinking about getting a Bluetooth GPS receiver to work with an Android tablet.  It would be used in conjunction with various Map Apps like Here Maps etc.

 

Is anyone on here using one?

 

What make/model?

 

How good?

 

What app is needed on the device to make it work?

I tried pairing one that worked fine on my laptop, but my cheap tablet did nothing with it. Not sure how to make android use a bluetooth connected GPS, was still just doing wifi positioning, which doesnt really work well when it is connected to a wifi hotspot and driving around.

You need an app like Bluetooth GPS Mouse or Bluetooth GPS Provider installed in order for the external bluetooth GPS receiver to work on your tablet.

I use a Qstarz 818XT bluetooth GPS receiver connected to an Android phone in 5 or 10Hz mode for lap timing and precise line tracking in motorsport. It's brilliant. The same company also does all in one systems and units with logging built in.

 

 

 

The Blueetooth GPS provider works well but is only needed for apps that don't support external receivers directly. Most of the motorsport or lap timer apps support external GPS units (on android at least)
