Has anyone got any recommendations for a car GPS? Garmin or TomTom? Which serves NZ better. Please not an app (too annoying to take phone to/from car so would need a new phone and data plan) or Navman (too many bad experiences)

I realise this may not be the fashionable way to go but I'd prefer a dedicated device/screen.

We've got older TomTom and Garmin units. The TomTom is generally more reliable in terms of directions, the Garmin sometimes makes some pretty odd choices. The Garmin is more flexible in regard to alternative maps.

My father recently purchased a Garmin Drivesmart 55.

Pros: Glass screen (majority have resistive touchscreen, which damages easily!)

Map updates for life.

Large size.

Rather fluid GUI (comparatively speaking) and easy to use interface.

Cons: Quite a short USB power lead and goes from cigarette lighter plug straight to miniUSB. (Most do, but I'd get a miniUSB cable and a double USB cigarette lighter adaptor).

Compared to a mobile phone, map is slow to load/update when seeking, but fine when driving. (This is also very common, most GPS devices are slow as heck with the GUI as well).

My father in law has the Garmin 51 LMT-s with the built in dashcam. He travels thousands of KM's a week for his role as a pneumatics company rep and wanted something reliable and easy to use to replace both his aging GPS and dashcam. I really appreciate the dashcam camera has a swivel base to accommodate placing the unit on the corner of the windshield.
