We are travelling to Christchurch next and was looking to get a new GPS Device have looked at the Garmin Drive 51 LMT-S GPS Navigator as its a good price point for me.

Or would I be better to use my one+6 with google maps,  would prefer GPS as don't always a connected phone

In this day and age there's no reason to go with a GPS unit. Updates are infrequent, battery life seems to quickly do down, you have to keep removing it from the holder to prevent people trying to break into your car.

A smarpthone-based app is much more flexible, usually have much better search functionality. Also, if you need offline navigation because of coverage issues or lack of mobile data, just use Here WeGo and download maps for the countries you are visiting.

Or Google Maps itself to download maps for offline use.

Yup just use offline Google maps. Works great. Used it several times in the US.

Google Maps offline download specific areas that you have to search first. Here WeGo downloads entire countries (or states depending on the size if you want). Sometimes you haven't planned well and need the offline map...

Also Navigator has a free mode using downloadable Open Street Maps maps. Downloads are an entire country at a time, but it's only a few MB for all of NZ, for example.
