I am looking at buying the Navman MY-55 (or MY-50 or MY-500XT). However, I keep reading less than complimentary reviews about Navman. Anyone want to share their opinion for/against Navman or suggest any other brand/model? thanks

Navman are fine, at times....I was using my old one in Australia and more than once it led me down a dead end street.

I've got a TomTom One+ now and it's fine and cheap :) paid $192 for it from JBHifi onsale

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I had a Navman 520st (I think it was)... Sold it and bought a Tom Tom which hasn't let us down, both here in NZ and over Xmas/New Year whilst driving around Sydney for the first time. We got a Tom Tom XL340 IQ Routes Edition for around $340 with bonus OZ maps from DSE. Wouldn't go back to Navman now (Especially as I have still ringing in my ears "Perform a U-Turn when possible" from my father in laws Navman last year).

Give the Tom Tom a go...

Navman have better looking maps and interface - TomToms have more functionality.

I'll second this ... the Navman does have a better looking interface, however I replaced mine with a TomTom and I haven't looked back.

I got mine originally for the handsfree functionality - the only real problem I've had with the tomtom and handsfree is that a cheap (Vodafone 715 phone) wouldn't connect to the bluetooth on it.

All other issues with handsfree have been fixed by rebooting the phone (a windows mobile phone)

Navman are nice units BUT I would go with a unit running IGO 8, IGO8 has more up to date maps, and is more user friendly, It would seem that navman has forgotten where it started from.

I bought an MY55 in the weekend and used it perfectly (straight out of the box) to drive to Taupo and back from New Plymouth.

I like it a lot.

Great choices of voices.

It also "talks" to my Nokia cellphone, imported my contacts list and gives me hands free functionality which is great.

My boys (9, 6 and 4) loved the fact that from the comfort of our hotel room we could look through the restaurants and pick where to go for dinner.

Navman is a good user interface. It can be a bit pricey as well, cos they don't give free map updates other than when they are advertised. They also don't give free AU map like the others. Limited international maps if you are seeking those - they have the least amount of maps vs the others ......

Even if you buy the maps you cannot use the maps on another Navman even if your friend has a Navman. Because to install maps on the Navman you need a internet connection for authentication - Navman connected to computer to the Internet.

I bought a Navman MY-55 for Christmas. Worked fine in NZ until I purchased and installed the Australia map. Damn thing locked up after that and could never acquire a GPS signal. Since it was over 14 days old, I had to send it back to Navman for repair. They lost it, but did send me a brand new one 3 weeks later. Have just installed the Australia map onto the second unit and (oh surprise) it has now locked up too.
I have managed to use my MY-55 twice since new - not a good omen for anyone out there thinking of purchasing one of these!!! The online/phone support is short of useless. Am going to push to get my money back.
