Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone could recommend a good entry or mid-level GPS device. I was looking at either Navman Ezy40 and TomTom Via 160. Both currently have the same price (from JB Hi Fi) but the TomTom one looks better.

Or perhaps an equivalent Garmin model?

Will only be using it in New Zealand (for the time being anyway).

If you are after the GPS that "looks better" then I can't help you.

FWIW (not much).

I own several (read many) GPS units including Navman, Uniden, TomTom, Mitac and Garmin.

If you want a MUCH better sunlight readable display and weekly free map updates, then go for Garmin.

If you prefer 2 or 3 year old map data select any other make.

Model - up to you depending on your preferred options and screen size.

Good luck and enjoy whatever you choose.

Thanks for that. Which one is the comparable Garmin model?

I'm not really concerned with how it looks, more of its usability (user-friendliness, good screen and at least 4" size, text-to-speech etc etc).

I had a look at the Garmin ones and they are considerably more expensive, but probably for a reason too.

For exanple:

HN

nuvi 255W $157 Older model but a bargain - the only real difference - no "Junction View" Not at all important for me.

HN & DSE

nuvi 1390 $299 New model with "Junction View" and bluetooth.

DSE

nuvi 1350 $279 same as 1390 without bluetooth.

Any of the above Garmin GPS units will have cost you less than other brands after your first map update.
