So after a small nightmare have my fibre up and running with slingshot for a couple days now and I am unimpressed to say the least.

It appears I am traffic shaped to 2.8mb/s for FTP/Torrent/HTTP at non peak times like 4/5am (unless it's youtube/origin or steam which come down at linespeed 11mb/s+) and while I have a ticket posted I can't say I have high hopes about seeing it solved.

Last night and the night before from about 7pm onwards my download speed was 200kb/s (and sometimes lower) for anything that wasn't the above 3 which slowly raised to 600kb/s at 1am when I went to bed.

I accept that it would be "peak" time but I used to get linespeed on adsl almost 24/7 so ignoring origin/steam downloads I have actually been downgraded by going to fibre.

So to cut it short would orcon offer a better service? (I would be going for the unlimited plan just like I am on with slingshot - currently on Unlimited Plus $139)

Also can someone be kind and fill me in as to why my writing get's all bunched together despite using enter? :(

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hi Fearfac

We don't do any shaping on our unlimited products, so the experience should be great :-)

if you have any questions, sing out.

Our CEO is on the public record:

We don't throttle or shape ANY traffic on ANY plan. I can't put it clearer than that.

We <used> to shape P2P traffic at peak periods but haven't done so for many months.

We <used> to have a fair usage policy but having never used it, and it was causing problem with the advertising we were using, we removed it.

So:

No throttling on any Plan
No traffic shaping of any kind on any Plan
No fair usage policy

So I'm safe to assume theres a good chance of congestion at peak times (which I fully understand and expect) but besides that speeds should be MUCH better than what I'm currently getting on slingshot? damn...why'd I go with slingshot :( lol

Assuming I can get out of my contract with slingshot how hard is it to get switched over? would there be any downtime?

Thanks for the quick replies making me regret my provider choice!

We have stacks of bandwidth for our customers, in general if you hit congestion, it isn't in our network - even at peak times.

TBH I'm not aware of another UFB->UFB transfer but my expectation would be service stopped with old supplier and started with us on same day within a few hours at worst.

Sounds perfectly fine to me, was just adding more information to my ticket with slingshot (sub 200kb/s download) and the gentleman said that if they are unable to fix the issue they will look at dropping early termination fees, so hopefully I'll be signing up with Orcon very soon!

Appreciate the information.

I'm on Orcon unlimited fibre -- 100/50, in an UltraFastFibre (non-Chorus) region.  Speeds are fine.  I have torrented a few Raspberry Pi firmware images recently, they came down very quickly indeed -- easily hit the full hundred megabits.  And that's during the business day.

Perhaps Callplus can transfer their contract with Chorus to Orcon?

If this is something that is possible I'll certainly keep it in the back of my mind, at this point I think it's only fair to allow slingshot a few days grace to try and sort out the nagging issues I'm having (I'm patient but it is annoying) before jumping ship especially since I've had ADSL2 for many years with really zero issues.

Orcon is much more appealing though!

Just switched to unlimited (ADSL2) and my torrents max my link. Haven't noticed any difference from my old 200gb plan.

Games are fine.

Very happy with the plan.

As far as I know there has never been a Chorus process for that, for any connection type. Even where two businesses have combined, each with their own Chorus account, it is impossible to merge the accounts, it is a full churn to move a connection from one to the other. I think that idea is a non-starter.

Sigh at CS @ slingshot, they are basically now telling me they won't guarantee international speed (fair enough to a certain point) and because my local speedtest is fine they are quite happy offering me my current download speeds of 130kb-2.8mb/s (very rarely get the 2.8 now) and won't throw out my early termination fees.

This is rubbish.

I am on Orcon unlimited - speed is fine in Whanganui.  Wish same could be said for customer service, its truly woeful (and I came over from TCl/Vodafone so that is saying something!).

I'm sure their customer service wouldn't basically tell you to be happy with 130kb/s on a fibre line though!

Thinking hard about just taking the $200 hit to get away from slingshot at the moment.
