Something is seriously wrong here, congestion is pretty bad here but today it's been worse than ever, we've gone from an average 500kB/s down to an average of 140kB/s during the evening peak since July last year to now... Today is been terrible, I've called my ISP and lodged a ticket but wondering if anyone else is having issues...

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Here you go... 2 meters from wifi adapter makes little difference...

- Your ISP and plan = Slignshot 250G
- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL) = ADSL1 BUBA
- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin) = draytek Vigor 120 and
ADSL Status Mode State Up Speed Down Speed SNR Margin Loop Att.
G.DMT SHOWTIME 800000 7616000 14 9
- Your general location (or street) = Outram
- If you are rural or urban = rural although school is 100mB/s UFB
- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin = 200m to the exchange
- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service = UCLL
- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above = yyes many times, have hard wired filter and other people in the township are having same issues

Pretty much ADSL1 anywhere is poked at peak time these days. If there are no scheduled upgrade for you exchange, you may need to look at RBI Wireless.

wifi is still wifi no matter how close you are to the modem, you can still have interference

You're not on a ULL connection but are on an ADSL1 service probably connected to a Conklin or ASAM that has limited backhaul which will be saturated by neighbours using the service.

There is nothing anybody can do to resolve the issue, all you can do is hope you're getting an RBI upgrade (Chorus website will tell you this) or move to RBI wireless if that's the solution for your area.

Odd I've a document that was on the Chorus network update site, now moved somewhere else that has the following;

Locality ORA

Of course the information from Chorus on the Chorus website could be wrong.

Our frustration is that the Chorus website does not show any information for Outram, the school has UFB fibre up to 100 Mbps, none of the documents available show either RBI or UFB on the Network Build Update pages. Our service has deteriorated from 500kBbps to 140kBps peak time average in less than a year.

Sounds like you're on a heavily congested ASAM.

Yep - Congested ASAM that is not getting updated under the RBI I'm afraid.

Your only solution is to go to a wireless supplier or move. There is nothing anyone can do to improve your ADSL connection without Chorus upgrading your exchange under the RBI rollout.

Now that's depressing...

Wireless RBI really isn't an option with the prices and amount of data where they are currently. Not moving either the community here is great..

On a brighter note I'm pretty sure no one in Outram will be signing up to Colosseum or Spark (Netflix) poor shareholders.

Slingshot is always a bit slower on weekends anyway, so that probably doesn't help either. Ask Slingshot to lodge a congestion fault, at least Chorus can investigate whether there is any chance of increasing backhaul capacity.

Time to find a new industry!

It really depends on the value proposition. I haven't looked at RBI pricing lately but last time I did you get now get 100GB for around $200 with speeds that can be far higher than copper.

If I lived in an area and was stock on a Conklin or ASAM I'd be jumping at the chance to move to RBI. Yes the pricing may be a premium over xDSL, but at the end of the way wireless is a finite resource. RBI base pricing is also a regulated offering set by the Commerce Commission, so the more people that complain to them, the greater chance of them looking at it.

In many areas RBI wireless is the intended "upgrade" as upgrading existing copper infrastructure simply isn't cost effective.

I'd rather spend the extra money on getting DSL upgraded than wireless. In the last week we consumed 38G of data so wireless really isn't an option.

What's really grinding my bones is the ORA exchange missed out when Telecom was upgrading everything left right and centre. Now with UFB/RBI we are in a rural hole, cabinets around us being feed off the exchange are going to be upgraded. With the new fibre that has been feed to our school Chorus will now (if you pay) provide access to the Rural Fibre duct they ran down the main road to the town, but looks like not available in the town.

Our service has deteriorated and will only get worse as more people move into town. A new subdivision with 28 sections just got approved the other week...

Is there a way to find out how many DSL connections there are onto the ORA exchange and how many more it can handle?
