I just wanted to quickly check my thinking here...

I'm planning to switch from 2Degrees to Orcon.  I sent a message to 2Degrees asking for a new deal now that my fixed term is up, and quoting a better deal from Orcon.  I've had no response after a week, so I think I'll just up-sticks and switch to Orcon.

I'm billed a month in advance, like most places I guess, which means I'm paid up until 17 February.  Does that mean I can set a connection date with Orcon for, say 16 February, and avoid any further charges from 2Degrees?  It makes sense to me, but I wanted to check in case I've understood that wrong.

didn't they merge?

Still many months or even several years away before the actual networks will be merged into one.

They’re in the progress of merging. Personally, I would wait (I haven’t even phoned up to ask for a better deal) but to get a better deal you need to call them anyway.

You’re better to be out of contract currently in case you actually want to switch away from 2degrees after the merger. You’re only talking a few dollars per month. They may keep the sub brands around for a little bit but really with these mergers you don’t 100% know what will happen until it happens.

From a conversation I had with 2 Degrees 2 weeks ago they seemed very keen to give a great deal for a year signup and a new modem. Best deal I have had with them and all I asked for was a new price as I had just come out of contract.

For interests sake, I'm on 2degrees currently and recently realized that I was still on an older plan that cost more than the current ones. I emailed in an account query and while it took several weeks due to how overloaded they are. They did move me onto the cheaper current plan and put me back onto a 12 month contract for a further discount (as I had asked). So while things are slow currently, you most likely will get help if you give it a bit longer.

You should be calling and speaking to the retention team emailing a big player ISP and expecting a response in a week you are dreaming!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

2degrees have deals on their broadband page for if you commit to 12 months. Their 4G plans are pretty cheap. On their fiber plans you get a Fritzbox, Orbi WiFi6, and Prime Video. I'm not sure you'll get a better deal than that. I've gotten those types of deals when resigning as an existing customer

No - it's a Netgear Orbi.
