Anyone managed to get Asus RT-AX3000 router running on 2 degrees fibre? All the advice in forums is a few years old and contrary to what 2 degrees say.

I have tried to follow 2 degrees advice on BYO routers

  • WAN Connection Type: DHCP (Automatic IP/Dynamic IP/IP over Ethernet)
  • 802.1Q: Enabled
  • VLAN ID (802.1Q): 10
  • 802.1P (Priority): 0
  • IP Version: IPv4 or IPv6
  • MTU Size: 1492 or 1500
  • NAT: Enabled
  • NAT: Enabled

and "DHCP authentication and VLAN tagging"

The error the router stated is related to DHCP and I am not sure whether the requirements for authentication are DHCP protocol related or username/password ( I never got any instruction regarding username/password) on the router. Also I can't find the VLAN tagging - I assume VLAN ID 10 is the tag. The MTU option only seems to be available with a different connection protocol.

Anyway I have ordered the 2 degrees router Netgear Obis ( no charge as I am on 12 month contract anyway) and it should be here tomorrow but I would like to get the AX3000 working giving me two choices of router.

This maybe all moot as I have now realised I need a static address (which I have ordered) so DCHP would not be used I assume but I am still interested if anyone is using AX3000 and how they have configured it.

Thanks

Static public address is assigned via DHCP be it on a PPPoE or IPoE connection.

vlan assignment is typically in the IPTV section on an Asus.

Follow the Vodafone instructions https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettings#VDFRTAC as the instructions on PBTech re: 2Degrees relate to legacy PPPoE connections rather than IPoE/DHCP.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Aha shows my ignorance.

The router manual shows connection types and I selected DHCP as that was what 2 degrees stated

It is only when you selection PPPoE that you get the option to put in user name and password which I had assume to be the authentication 2 degrees had stated

I got it working!!!!

All I did different was go to LAN IPTV and select 2 degrees from the dropdown menu - reboot and it connected. There was no option for VLAN ID

Selected DHCP as the protocol for Internet (as I did before) so it was the LAN IPTV change that made it work.

OOKla shows 888 DL and 279 upload. The upload seem a bit slow I was expecting 450

Thanks for the info re IPTV. I was put off by it being in the LAN tab

Strangely enough logging back into the modem after it connected it stated that there is an invalid account or password but the connection works. I had selected 802.1x for the Authentication under the Account tab and entered my two degrees customer number (not my user name) and password ( no instructions from 2 degrees). Either using my customer number or email when I log into 2 degree account seems to work.

The network display on the router keeps stating invalid account or password but the connection is still up. I am confused but happy its connected.

Update- Turn off the account tab and authentication to None and I not longer get the error just the IP address display.

Happy camper!!!!

Just found this thread, they are good routers mainly but that IPTV setting is in a strange spot but usually the answer to all the problems :)

Thanks @Tatou stumbled across this having got the AX3000 (figured it was time to retire the trusty fritz 7490 after 8y excellent service) and ergo got myself into world of pain setting this up with 2D fibre. Why is this not plug and play in 2023.

Anyway, for anyone else, my key hurdles (other than being a noob at this stuff):

1) whereas ONT -> 7490 via LAN1, this is ONT -> AX3000 via WAN port. Duh, but easy to doubt the instructions when some apparently arcane periodic restarting ONT +/- router is required.

2) DHCP with automatic IP is correct, ignore the details from 2D BYO modem about 802.1Q / VLAN etc. Wasted heaps of time looking through the AX3000's settings for these fields including changing the WAN connection type to PPPoE.

3) LAN IPTV setting IP profile to 2D. The final piece of the puzzle for me.

No problem. Glad to see you got there.

Router is working very well.

Found my old Asus 68U (AC1900) that I thought I had given away hence the need to get the AX3000 when I retired the Vodafone router and Vodafone cable.

Set it up as an Aimesh node in between the AX3000 and a dead spot in the kitchen area. Very helpful.

Yeah what an upgrade on a router that came out 10y ago! Getting down/up speeds on the 5GHz around 800/500 similar to my desktop that's cabled to the router. Insane.

Good point about dead spots - going to try Aimesh-ing my garage...

I am not using ethernet for the backhaul though I could through an old Powerline set I have- might get 150Mbps through them.

There is only two of us in the house and the wifi is only used for mobile phones and browsing on a laptop so using wifi for backhaul is no problem.

The kitchen was always slightly poor especially when sitting by a couch on the other side of a fridge.

Now with the 68U in the opposite corner ( about half way between the AX3000 which in a central room on a piano) great wifi reception.

Hardest bit was upgrading the firmware on the 68U as I had to make it my main router again - luckily I had the password from a few years ago- so I could upgrade the firmware.

Before that firmware upgrade the AX3000 could not find it but after it was upgraded and factory reset it was found immediately and linked.

Yes good technology from my view.

Thanks.

Couldn't get Aimesh to find the Netgear AC1200 EX6150 and ended up just setting it up via the extender itself, which works ok for connecting to the smart power plugs in the garage.

Thanks Tatou, you post made this super simple for me moving from Bigpipe to 2degrees

Literally all i did was switch IPTV (LAN>IPTV) from none to 2Degrees, applied, rebooted and everything is working

Glad it worked.

The AX3000 has been rock solid since I got it. Make sure you update to the latest firmware as the earlier firmware has a significant weakness re security

I think AiMesh doesn't work with non-Asus routers
