Hello,

I have a question regarding 2Degrees coverage and the roaming on Vodafone's network.

I was in the Tongariro national park last week end and I noticed that my cellphone displayed the "No Service" message, even though the reception icon was displaying "some" reception (3 or 4 bars out of 5).

I had a look inside my phone's menu and it appeared that the phone was getting some Vodafone signal. This was confirmed by other people who were able to get phone service.

My question is:
Should my 2Deg phone ALWAYS get coverage where there is Vodafone coverage?
Is there anything special to set up on the phone to allow for this?

Thanks,

Guillaume

2degrees roaming on Vodafone is only where 2degrees service is not officially available. Perhaps there isn't enough coverage in that specific spot, but if that area falls under the 2degrees official coverage area then Vodafone is not required to provide the service.

2 degrees can roam on Vodafone's network outside the areas where they have a presence, ie the main centres where they have a presence, however, I believe they can not roam onto areas where there is 3g only coverage. Perhaps you were picking up a 3g only cell site, where, you could not roam.
I also believe that, when 2 Degrees launch 3g services, you will then be able to roam onto these cell sites. Perhaps someone from 2 Degrees / Vodafone can confirm?

Apparently when 2degrees releases 3g there will not be any roaming onto Vodafones 3g for some time. It has something to do with configuration. So it looks like 3g will only be in the three main centres to begin with. I don't mind as we all know what rushing a network out turns out like... XT

If you're outside the 2degrees coverage areas of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown you can roam onto Vodafone GSM sites. Within these coverage areas you are unable to roam into Vodafone.

Your location should have given you service, my guess would be that your phone has connected to a 3G site somewhere where there is no GSM signal and as others have mentioned above 2degrees customers can't roam on the Vodafone 3G network.

What type of handset do you have?

I haven't tried to be honest but I am pretty sure I could.
At some point, I tried to make a call and my phone displayed a "Emergency Only" message.

You will not be able to roam on Vodafone 3G even after 2d has launched their 3G network, they say it may take some time.

As I understand, there will be no 3G roaming at first, but it is in the pipeline. OR there will be no 3G seamless roaming (whereby the handshake is seamless)
