The phone looks cool, although I'm wanting to go beyond an 800Mhz processor because it's just too damn slow!

It's got the same specifications as my acer e210 and i can barely do anything on there because it comes up with "Your space is getting low" so i uninstalled everything and tether it to my ipod now.

ALTRON: Ugh. So I've got to get a new NFC enabled device just to use this feature.

I'll stick to my snapper card eh.

If the NFC for Snapper is just part of the deal, then I might grab my daughter's Nexus S (she is in the US now) and give it to my son who uses Snapper each day and I get tired of having to top it up when it's low. Then I would replace my daughter's Nexus S with the GN at the US$399 deal Google has on at the moment.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

More details tomorrow, and you will be at the event, so don't go doing anything until you hear everything (if you can't get your questions answered come and talk to me during the drinks).

Have to say the idea behind this tech is pretty good one less thing to carry around is great I've not carried a wallet around for a few years now and just take the few cards I use (or intend to use) each day when going out giving my pocket much more space for the Optimus 2x hehe.

As for the comment about phone based NFC only it's not just phone based as others have mentioned this can be implemented (although not yet here) through a (special) sim card.

Also it is correct to say it is NZ's first NFC phone as the other capable phones are not able to use the tech yet as not linked up with the current (phone) provider of NFC being 2 Degrees. So although there's quite a few capable devices around they still are not able to use it just yet but if @ Degrees are on the ball they'll want to get as many people on to it asap so will enable as many devices as they can quick smart so they can be the true leader for this.

I'd beg to differ with the  “As New Zealand’s first NFC phone, the LG Optimus Net will help revolutionise the way people use both their phone and their money.” statement.

Nexus S?

What about all those Galaxy S2??   I guess all the ones sold here by the carriers didn't have NFC chips..  Pity they didn't have a bit more foresight as I won't be buying a new fone just for NFC anytime soon..

Not sure NFC can be implemented in a SIM card. Just look at this teardown of the Galaxy Nexus and see what the NFC chip is.

http://www.chipworks.com/en/technical-competitive-analysis/resources/recent-teardowns/2011/12/inside-the-samsung-galaxy-nexus-gt-i9250/

The wrinkle with the GN is that the antenna for the NFC chip is in the battery which is a strange design decision since the first Google NFC enabled phone, the Nexus S had the entire capability in the phone itself.

When I got my GN I also got two spare batteries. One is from Samsung and the other one is 3rd party and the documentation clearly states that NFC will not work with this battery.

1. sell phone without feature
2. introduce feature as amazing
3. sell another phone with feature

seems a pretty solid business practice to me.

Do you mean I have to buy a new handset now to use those newfangled "camera phone" things?

And if that "camera phone" thingy was in the overseas models but not in the local supplied ones??

HOP is the same thing as Snapper. Same infrastructure, just Auckland being Auckland...
