I had a feeling DLM was only on VDSL, but that might have changed.

Do you know how old your old modems are? ADSL2+ has been standard for a very long time (>10 years), so chances are it's only the WiFi performance that has improved.

And again... strongly recommend getting to the ETP, disconnecting all internal wiring, and connecting the router and a phone (via filter) directly to the incoming line.

Do you have a cellphone that supports voice over WiFi? Fibre with no landline and that could be an option.

Tomahawk66:

I will be attempting to qualify for the 111 emergency thing when the time eventually comes.

For others reading, this PRICE and having a LANDLINE is the only consideration I am concerned about. Speed is irrelevant to me as my current adsl has been fine up until now. And once this issue is fixed there is no reason to suggest it won't be fine again.

I understand your reason for this is simply this:

Tomahawk66:

Yes, close to Tomahawk Rd. :-)

I refuse to have fibre as I have no cell reception. Power goes down or internet goes down and I'm stuffed without my copper line.

But just note for 111 calls your phone uses whatever coverage is available and there is coverage around this location on either one of the 3 providers. You've also got WiFi calling on Vodafone and 2degrees and maybe, eventually Spark. So having good reliable broadband is actually more important than ever.

Your phone line doesn't work in the same way it once worked - I fully bet this is fed from a local cabinet with battery backup so in the event of a long power outage you'll be reliant on mobile for emergency calls. These days Copper voice actually isn't the same beast it once was 10 years ago when they had a big fat Exchange powering them. Lastly, I fully bet very soon Slingshot will be forcing you onto VoIP as basically every provider is.

As for whether this could repeat once fixed... it absolutely could. Old copper buried underground that no-one wants to maintain.

Are you certain that none of the three providers have coverage? Bear in mind that you can use a fixed, directional antenna that will give you significantly better signal than a phone.

"Getting to the ETP ? "

I've done all those different connection things already. This current modem is a much better one than my old Telecom. I can't disconnect anything at the moment because Slingshot are monitoring the line for 24 hours.

FOR THE 100th TIME. There is NO CELL reception at my house. Wireless is not possible where I live. Other people in the neighbourhood have tried. Various companies have come out to neighbours to try to see if it will work and it will not.

So you opened up the box on the outside of your house where the cable enters, and cut the cables so that your house was physically disconnected from the phone line, and wired the modem up to that? Because you didn't say that earlier.

Yes, we know you're in a 24-hour monitoring period. That's probably not going to change much and you can test after the 24 hours.

You've said there's no coverage on a phone. Up til now you haven't said that professionals have tried to get coverage with antennas and poles and had no luck. Very different things.

E17. Priority for Emergency Calls
VSPs will manage their networks in such a way that Emergency Calls have priority in the network,
and where the Voice Service is provided wholly or partly over another person’s network, the VSP
shall ensure to the extent practical that the other person’s network prioritises Emergency Calls.  - https://www.tcf.org.nz/industry/standards-compliance/public-services/emergency-calling/code-for-emergency-voice-calling-services.pdf

Even though your phone and your neighbours phones say they have no service, there is a high chance there is enough of it to make an emergency call. Networks will disconnect non-emergency callers if necessary to put the call through.

So did this get sorted in the end?

Yesterday it ran perfectly all day and I don't believe there was a single drop out. It might have dropped out last night ? I am having a friend who is quite techy, look at my wiring inside my house this weekend.

The DSL UpTime numbers at the very bottom, is looking 'wrong' though, compared with how it was looking when I kept checking all of yesterday. Or maybe I am misunderstanding what this number stands for ??

Nothing has been turned off in this time.

DSL will drop out and re-negotiate if there's a significant dip in line quality. This resets the uptime counter. I'd say you still have some issues.

That said, the fact that it's still negotiated at a reasonably fast rate means that either a) the line is still quite good even when it's faulty, or b) the drops in line quality are very short and it's mostly recovered by the time renegotiation finishes.

Wait another 24 hours and see if it stays up.

It's dried out is basically what it means. This is about when the tech would turn up if you booked one when it was faulty, and they would try to charge you a no fault found fee.

This will get worse every time it rains as the copper is degrading and there is no case for repairing it if there is fiber in the area. Eventually it will not come back up and they may decide to look at a bodge fix but that will just last till the next derelect joint or slightly broken cable gives way.

They may be able to swap you to another pair since there will be plenty free in the bundles now, but again that means working on the network that is a dead end.

Not quite but for now I am living with it. Thank you for checking in.

I have had the wiring inside my house 'fixed and tidied up', that made a big difference. My broadband is mostly working as it was before, ie I can watch TV on demand no issues 99% of the time. The phone line is good and isn't crackly etc. The WAN light on my modem does sometimes flicker and then turn off..... this was happening when a phone call came in, but not when I made a call out, but I wasn't actually cut off from the phone call.  The other morning (1 Nov 6.26am) I was booted off the net for no reason at all, ie no incoming phone call. WAN light off, Slingshot light off. Then it just re-connected itself.

Doing further research on line I found people overseas with similar weird issues years ago and advice was it might be line card issues at the exchange. This is how the stats read this morning.
