HOP is the same thing as Snapper. Same infrastructure, just Auckland being Auckland...

For the next few months, anyway. Later this year the HOP system is changing to the Thales solution and so far it is looking unlikely that Snapper will be able to plug into it.

I like the new emergence of technology I still remember the numerous sores and blisters I would get on my feet from my previous phone before upgrading to the Optimus 2x the damned tripod for my old phones camera kept stabbing me on the top of my foot it was terribly painful at times.

I must say though I was more hoping KFC technology than NFC as getting a burger on the go would be sweet hmmm maybe KFC could team up with NFC though i wonder.....oh the possibilities.

Not quite. Its looking like there will be an Auckland re-issue of HOP-branded-snapper-cards because they aren't up to the spec that Thales is implementing. In particular the Snapper issued cards don't process quick enough.

The migration to Thales is something yet to come. And the AKL/TNZ trial is a trial, while the Snapper announcement is production...

The wrinkle with the GN is that the antenna for the NFC chip is in the battery which is a strange design decision since the first Google NFC enabled phone, the Nexus S had the entire capability in the phone itself.

When I got my GN I also got two spare batteries. One is from Samsung and the other one is 3rd party and the documentation clearly states that NFC will not work with this battery.

The SIM can have an antenna attached. Some phones can therefore wrap it around the battery. But obviously it depends on the physical layout of the phone.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

Well the smallest NFC antenna is 5mmx10mm, the micro SD I have here is roughly 15mmx12mm in my HTC One X...although my secondary cut down sim seems to be smaller, stupid self cutting :(

And replacing the battery on an iPhone is a 10 second job. Unscrew the two base screws, slide cover down, replace battery, slide cover back on, and re screw. Did it a few weeks ago for the bosses phone.

Although not sure if that many people want to go through the hassle of removing the back

Edit: Just had a thought while remembering my bosses phone. He has a super slim battery pack case. I'm sure they could fit NFC technology into one of the slim Casemate phone cases, or similar

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

It is. Take your piece of 2degs. hardware (that would be the sim), and insert it in a suitable NFC enabled device.... ;-)

So if this is compatible to Snapper only then it will be useless in Auckland? NZ's biggest population by far...
Yet another "amazing" bit of Technology that no-one can use...

One of my cards has "Visa Paywave" but Im yet to find anywhere I can use that...

Looks like what wont be coming is Android Direct Carrier Billing.
Google just announced more carriers who are supporting buying apps by using your mobile balance, but nobody in NZ/AU.
Supporting this would be a big deal for a carrier like 2d who have lots of kids/people without credit cards and sell who sell lots of cheap android phones. It mean people topping up more which gives them a bigger float which is worth a lot in interest.

I suppose there may be the risk of customers then spending their 2degrees credit on Google apps and reducing their actual 2degrees service spend thereby impacting 2degrees profitability.

Do the Mobile providers receive any sort of commission for the credit being used to purchase through Google?
